But his whole world was about to fall apart as his father Stuart passed away after a battle with mental health.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy father was an inspiration to a lot of people locally,&#8221; Roberts says. &#8220;He managed to play professionally in the game and then to me there\u2019s that cliche of being a hero but he was exactly that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe had a huge impact on my football career. He could never actually watch any of the big games. He could never watch, he was an absolute nervous wreck and I completely understand why now.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately he hit depression, he hit low mood where he did struggle with lack of confidence. His anxiety was heightened. His guilt was heightened. That\u2019s all natural when you\u2019re in depression and people, I think, relate to \u2018what the hell is happening to me\u2019 but that\u2019s all normal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-faw-card\"><div class=\"is-layout-constrained wp-block-group is-style-faw-card\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-block-button__link-card\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/nhs-services\/mental-health-services\/where-to-get-urgent-help-for-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Find help here<\/a><div class=\"faw-cards__card__text p-4\"><h2 class=\"is-style-faw-h3 mb-4 faw-text--border\">If you need support<\/h2><div class=\"btn-w-auto wp-block-button \"><div class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Find help here<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Since his father\u2019s passing, Roberts has experienced his own struggles with mental health while dealing with grief.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the goalkeeper admits that his problems would not have been obvious to most people around him, highlighting the hidden battles that many face on a day-to-day basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve probably had two or three tough, tough episodes, scary episodes in fact, and you\u2019re just not yourself, you\u2019re not thinking clearly. You do feel like something\u2019s took over your body but it\u2019s important to just drive and be around people that will support you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou would never guess that I was going through what I\u2019ve been going through but that means anybody can be having a bit of a rough time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not over that yet, I\u2019m nowhere near over that yet. This is a journey, this is a rollercoaster and it simply hasn\u2019t finished.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhoever listens to this interview, you don\u2019t need to worry about me because I\u2019ve got a brilliant support network but I\u2019m just saying I\u2019m nowhere near out of the journey and I understand there\u2019s ups and downs throughout this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/d20w35i08zcmee.cloudfront.net\/Roberts2-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d20w35i08zcmee.cloudfront.net\/Roberts2-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/d20w35i08zcmee.cloudfront.net\/Roberts2-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/d20w35i08zcmee.cloudfront.net\/Roberts2-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/d20w35i08zcmee.cloudfront.net\/Roberts2.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Roberts describes his father as his &#8216;hero&#8217;<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Roberts\u2019 father watched him lift multiple trophies, but his passing meant that he was not able witness one of the goalkeeper\u2019s career highlights \u2013 qualifying for the League Phase of the 2024\/25 UEFA Conference League.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In doing so, TNS became the first JD Cymru Premier club to reach that stage of a major European competition, with Roberts going on to feature against the likes of Fiorentina and Panathinaikos and in a historic win over Astana. He finished the League Phase with more saves than any other goalkeeper.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am a huge believer that he would\u2019ve been watching the European games but they were extremely tough I must say,\u201d Roberts admits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCraig [Harrison, TNS manager] will vouch for this, I probably broke down after every single European game unfortunately, just because you wish he could be there live in the flesh to witness it and go through that experience with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/d20w35i08zcmee.cloudfront.net\/2024-11-07-Shamrock-Rovers-vs-The-New-Saints-107-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d20w35i08zcmee.cloudfront.net\/2024-11-07-Shamrock-Rovers-vs-The-New-Saints-107-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d20w35i08zcmee.cloudfront.net\/2024-11-07-Shamrock-Rovers-vs-The-New-Saints-107-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d20w35i08zcmee.cloudfront.net\/2024-11-07-Shamrock-Rovers-vs-The-New-Saints-107-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/d20w35i08zcmee.cloudfront.net\/2024-11-07-Shamrock-Rovers-vs-The-New-Saints-107.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Roberts played every minute of The New Saints&#8217; UEFA Conference League campaign<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Roberts says that his father\u2019s passing took its toll on his playing career and in February he confirmed his intention to retire at the end of the season.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 32-year-old signed off in the best possible way, as helped TNS secure their first domestic treble \u2013 the JD Cymru Premier, JD Welsh Cup and Nathaniel MG Cup \u2013 since 2016.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to make my father proud every single time I stepped on the pitch and when you lose that impact, I just feel like not what\u2019s the point but that I\u2019m not doing it for the reasons that I want to,\u201d Roberts said, explaining his retirement. \u201cI kind of want that chapter to finish and begin my own chapter in terms of coaching.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want him to stay with me, of course, but I\u2019ve told my councillor and professional people around me that once I do finish and retire I will feel like something releases so I\u2019m hoping that does happen and that I do find peace within myself and that can help me get over this journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately I lost my father but I\u2019m so grateful that I\u2019ve also experienced mental health, if that makes sense, because I can relate that back to the kids that I end up coaching.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFootball at the beginning [after he died] was that release but now it\u2019s not quite releasing the stress that I feel towards life itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/d20w35i08zcmee.cloudfront.net\/2025-04-11-TNS-v-Bala-183-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12514\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d20w35i08zcmee.cloudfront.net\/2025-04-11-TNS-v-Bala-183-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d20w35i08zcmee.cloudfront.net\/2025-04-11-TNS-v-Bala-183-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d20w35i08zcmee.cloudfront.net\/2025-04-11-TNS-v-Bala-183-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/d20w35i08zcmee.cloudfront.net\/2025-04-11-TNS-v-Bala-183.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Roberts has helped TNS win the treble in his final season at the club<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As his mental health journey continues, Roberts says he deploys different techniques to help him cope with feelings of depression and anxiety.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe one thing that I will take from what I\u2019ve learnt, and I have seeked professional help, is that this will pass. It\u2019s only a temporary feeling of feeling down and feeling depressed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cContinue to do things where you feel like time goes really fast because that\u2019s when you know you\u2019re enjoying yourself. There\u2019s that saying \u2018time flies when you\u2019re having fun\u2019 so the more moments that you can spend and more activities you can involve yourself in doing that then definitely go for those.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s completely natural to go through the things that you are going through and trust me if you are experiencing low mood and depression then you\u2019re certainly not the only person out there that\u2019s feeling like that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut again, try and put yourself back into good habits, healthy habits, activities that you really love doing.
