Cardiff Met take on UNA Strassen of Luxembourg in the UEFA Youth League at Cyncoed Stadium on Wednesday 16 September (KO 19:45) in what is another significant step forward for their Academy and the culmination of a decade of hard work and investment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo many people have invested an enormous amount of time and energy into developing this Academy over several years,\u201d explained Cardiff Met\u2019s Director of Football System Chris Baker. \u201cQualification for the UEFA Youth League is a reward for that collective commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe journey over the last decade is what gives the achievement real perspective. When you consider where the Academy was ten years ago, everyone who has contributed to that journey can take an enormous amount of pride in what has been achieved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cardiff Met qualified for the UEFA Youth League with a dramatic 2-1 win over Connah\u2019s Quay Nomads in the FAW National Academi Development League Play-Off back in May. Charlie Keough was the hero that day as he scored the 96th<\/sup>-minute winner. The Archers now enter Round 1 of the Domestic Champions Path, with the return leg taking place in Luxembourg on 14 October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat people ultimately see is success on the pitch,\u201d Baker added. \u201cBut behind that are countless hours of planning, coaching, analysis and individual player development. Three contacts a week and matchdays show a significant investment of time and energy, with standards and expectations never wavering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey have created an environment for talented players to develop, reflected in first\u2011team integration. It\u2019s important to recognise the contribution of the team around the team, with practitioners supporting young players week in, week out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cQualification reflects the quality of people throughout the Academy, aiming to develop players and ambitious young coaches. A major strength is authentic learning opportunities through academic connection, providing meaningful experiences. We\u2019re beginning to see tangible evidence of that model working.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Academy at Cardiff Met plays an important role in strengthening the senior team that compete in the Novira Cymru Premier, while a similar pathway is also in place to develop female players to represent the club in the Genero Adran Premier. Both senior teams have played in European competition previously, but qualification for the UEFA Youth League represents a new opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt gives young players and their families another compelling reason to consider our unique offer at Cardiff Met,\u201d explained Baker. \u201cA young player can progress through our Academy, compete in the UEFA Youth League, move into Cymru or Adran Premier football, study at Cardiff Met, compete in BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) and potentially experience senior European football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re seeing tangible evidence of that model working through first\u2011team squads, professional contracts and degree programmes. Relationships with professional clubs provide opportunity for talented young players transitioning out of the game, and that growing credibility attracts high\u2011calibre players who recognise an environment to continue development through a dual\u2011career pathway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the immediate challenge for Cardiff Met is to become the first Welsh club to progress through the opening round of the competition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve obviously tried to gather as much information as we can, but there is naturally a little more uncertainty when you come up against European opposition that you don\u2019t encounter regularly,\u201d Baker added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s part of what makes the competition so exciting. It exposes our players and staff to a different footballing context and challenges us to prepare in a slightly different way. We have a great deal of respect for FC UNA Strassen, they\u2019ve earned their place in the competition in the same way that we have. We know we\u2019ll face a very capable outfit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut we\u2019re at Cyncoed for the first leg and we want to embrace that. Hopefully we can generate a strong atmosphere, give the players an occasion they\u2019ll remember, and put in a performance that represents Cardiff Met and Welsh football positively.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The bigger picture \u2013 How European football boosts the FAW National Academi<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the third season that Welsh clubs have been invited to compete in the UEFA Youth League. The competition was established in 2013 and provides an important platform for best young players in Europe, offering essential experience of international competition while reducing the gap between youth and senior football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe UEFA Youth League place has undoubtedly helped raise the profile and status of the FAW National Academi and, more broadly, the opportunities available to young players in the Welsh system,\u201d explained FAW National Academi (Boys) Manager Brad Flay. \u201cCompeting on the European stage gives our players something tangible to aspire to and provides a really valuable life experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New Saints were the first Welsh club to compete in the competition in 2024\/25 but were eliminated by Lithuanian outfit FK \u017dalgiris. Last season, Haverfordwest County suffered a 5-3 aggregate defeat against Montenegrin side Budu\u0107nost, but the side caused problems for their opponents for long periods and demonstrated that Welsh clubs can make a positive impression at this level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a fantastic achievement for both teams, and the experience will be something these young players can take with them throughout their development,\u201d added Flay. \u201cThe experience of the competition provided valuable exposure to European football and a different level of challenge for the players and the FAW National Academi system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCardiff Met have a great opportunity to show what they are capable of. There has been fantastic work done at the club, and they deserve all the credit. They will come up against a different style and level of opposition, but that’s exactly what makes the UEFA Youth League such a valuable experience for the players, the club, and National Academi system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf they can progress, it would be fantastic for Cardiff Met. The further they can go, the more experience and exposure the players gain, and hopefully that can inspire the next generation of young Welsh players to believe that European football is something they can achieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt also gives Welsh football greater visibility internationally and demonstrates that there is a pathway for young Welsh players to experience and be exposed to elite U19 European competition. European football can be a really attractive proposition for young players, particularly those who are ambitious and want to test themselves against the very best.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The potential opportunity for U19 players to compete in the UEFA Youth League provides an advantage to clubs in the domestic game that will inevitably strengthen the National Academi system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cClubs should absolutely use that opportunity as part of their offering, because being able to tell a young player that there is a genuine possibility of representing their club in Europe is a strong selling point,\u201d explained Flay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUltimately, it’s about creating a meaningful U19 National Academi development league, where there is meaning and purpose, with a clear pathway from youth football into senior football and potentially onto the European stage.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
