Genero Adran Premier | Weekend preview

Following a one-month break, the Genero Adran Premier returns on Sunday as phase two gets under way with some crucial fixtures.

Cardiff City currently sit five points clear at the top of the table and they continue their quest for a second successive title by hosting Aberystwyth Town.

The Bluebirds suffered their first league loss defeat in almost two years as Swansea City defeated them 2-0 in the final match of phase one, but Iain Darbyshire’s side have responded perfectly by reaching the final of both the Genero Adran Trophy and Bute Energy Welsh Cup.

Aberystwyth Town ended phase one on a three-match unbeaten run, securing their top four spot with a 3-3 draw against The New Saints on matchday 14. They will now relish the underdog tag in phase two, taking on three sides with semi-professional status.

It finished goalless in the first meeting in the capital between the two sides this season, before Eliza Collie’s hat-trick steered the Bluebirds to an emphatic 5-0 victory at Park Avenue and Ffion Price’s treble helped earn a 4-0 win in the Genero Adran Trophy semi-final.

Swansea City and Wrexham are both chasing down Cardiff City at the top of the table and they meet at Llandarcy in the opening game of phase two.

The second-place Swans closed the gap on the Bluebirds to five points with victory in the capital at the end of phase one, while the Red Dragons sit three points further back in third place.

The two clubs experienced differing fortunes in the Bute Energy Welsh Cup semi-finals last weekend, with Swansea losing to Cardiff City and Wrexham booking their spot in the final courtesy of victory over The New Saints.

Katy Hosford salvaged a point for Swansea in a thrilling 3-3 draw between these two sides on the opening day of the season, before Hosford dealt damage to Wrexham again in November as her goal along with Ellie Lake’s strike secured a narrow 2-1 win at the Swansea.com Stadium.

The New Saints and Cardiff Met both finished in the Genero Adran Premier top four last season, but they have been left to chase the Plate this time around.

TNS are on a seven-match winless run in all competitions, which includes defeat in the semi-finals of both the Genero Adran Trophy and Bute Energy Welsh Cup in the last fortnight.

This is Met’s first season in the Plate Conference and they are without victory in their last four games, but the Archers will have taken confidence from a 2-2 draw away at Wrexham at the end of phase one.

Caitlin Chapman scored a 86th-minute equaliser as the two sides played out an enthralling 4-4 draw in September, before TNS were 4-1 winners in the reverse fixture in December.

Bottom side Pontypridd United produced improved performances against Cardiff City and Wrexham towards the end of phase one, but the Dragons’ survival hopes are hanging by a thread.

They are yet to win a league game this season and sit on just one point – 11 adrift of safety with just 18 points left to play for.

Ponty begin phase two by travelling to Barry Town United, who ended phase one by winning three of their last four matches and will now have their eyes set on lifting the Plate.

India Shanahan scored in both phase one matches between these two sides as Barry secured 3-0 and 2-0 victories.
