FAW Referee Award

The FAW Referee Award is a fully interactive, video-led online course which prepares you for the challenge of becoming a referee.

Once you’ve passed your online Referee Award you will attend an in-person practical session with a refereeing expert who will put you through your paces and get you ready to begin your refereeing journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will the course take? 

The online course usually takes anything between three and 10 hours. Go at your own pace. The practical course is 2 hours long and we have a range of dates and venues available. 

What does the course entail? 

The majority of the course is online and video-led, designed to prepare you for the challenge of becoming a referee. Once you have completed the online section, you can arrange your in-person practical session.

What happens when I qualify?

Once you qualify, you’re able to referee matches. You’ll be supported by your local referees’ officer and given a mentor for your first game. 

Does my age matter?

You must be 14 or over to qualify as a referee, you can take the course at 13 but remember you won’t be able to pick up the whistle on your first game until you turn 14! 

Junior referees (Under 16s) are only permitted to referee Junior football. As soon as you turn 16 you are permitted to officiate any age football in Wales. 

Do I need a DBS?

Yes. Everyone over the age of 16 who wishes to referee in Wales must have a DBS. Details of how to obtain your dbs are held within the course.
