Genero Adran Trophy: Group Stage matchday 2 preview

The second round of group stage matches in the Genero Adran Trophy awaits on Sunday, with some clubs potentially able to secure a place in the knockout stage with a game to spare.

Group 1

Cascade will reach the knockout stage for the second consecutive season if they win away at Taffs Well.

Wayne Lewis’ team began the group stage with a 2-0 home win over Penybont last weekend, thanks to late goals from Chrystalla Moreton and Olivia Townsend. Taffs Well twice trailed against Cwmbran Celtic in their first group game, but fought back to draw 2-2 – Michael Major scoring an 89th-minute equaliser.

Penybont and Cwmbran Celtic meet at the DragonBet Stadium in Group 1’s other fixture this weekend.

Both teams qualified for the knockout stage last season, but defeat for either side Sunday would make progression this time around seem unlikely.

It was a thrilling contest when the two clubs met in the group stage last season as Bont claimed a 3-2 away win. Celtic won the first Genero Adran South meeting 2-0, but Bont prevailed in the reverse fixture.

Group 2

After Cardiff Met and Pure Swansea were victorious on Matchday 1, wins for both sides again on Sunday would see them each secure a knockout stage spot before they play each other in their final group game.

Cardiff Met triumphed 2-0 at home over Llanelli Town in their opener but now make the long trip west to newly-promoted Carmarthen Town.

The Old Gold were beaten 1-0 away at Pure Swansea last weekend, with Chris Church’s side now travelling to Llanelli.

The Swans won both Genero Adran South meetings against the Reds last season, with a 6-2 victory and a narrow 1-0 win thanks to Jess Goucher’s strike. They also met in the Genero Adran Trophy group stage and drew 1-1.

Group 3

Llandudno and Connah’s Quay Nomads meet at the Go Goodwins Stadium after both sides claimed victories on Matchday One.

The Seasiders earned a hard-fought 2-1 win away at Felinheli, while the Nomads edged past newly-promoted Berriew 1-0 thanks to captain Polly Wild-McGregor’s second half strike.

The Nomads won 2-1 in last season’s group stage, which was the first of five meetings between the two sides in league and cup competitions. Jordan Parry’s side also earned 5-2 and 7-1 victories on their way to lifting the Genero Adran North.

Berriew and Felinheli will now both be looking to get off the mark when they meet at the Hayden Williams Recreation Field.

Both sides were narrowly beaten in their opening matches, but victory for either team would keep their knockout hopes alive heading into the final group fixture.

Group 4

Bangor and Flint Town United both made winning starts to Group 4, so another victory for either side would book their place in the knockout stage.

Menna Evans’ stunning strike gave Bangor a 1-0 win over Llangefni Town last weekend, while Rebecca Eagles starred on her Flint debut as her brace, which included a late winner, earned a 3-2 victory at home against Llanfair United.

Both sides played out a goalless draw on the opening day of the Genero Adran North last season, but Rosie Hughes’ double inspired the Silkwomen to a 3-0 triumph in the reverse fixture.

Wildcard entrants Llangefni have plenty of positives to build on despite their defeat at Bangor. Dan Gregg’s side now have two home matches to close out Group 4, with Llanfair visiting on Sunday.

Llanfair reached the last 16 for the first time ever last season, so they will not want to exit the competition this early.

The only previous meeting between the two sides came in the 2022/23 Genero Adran Trophy group stage as Llanfair earned a 4-1 away win.
