Genero Adran Trophy: Quarter-Final preview

Sunday is quarter-final day in the Genero Adran Trophy, with this season’s last eight made up of all the Genero Adran Premier clubs.

Holders The New Saints continue their defence of the trophy with a home tie against league strugglers Pontypridd United.

TNS are unbeaten in their last five matches in all competitions edged into the quarter-finals after a thrilling 5-4 victory over second tier outfit Llanfair United. Mikey Harris’ side are currently fourth in the Genero Adran Premier and were held to a 1-1 draw by Barry Town United last Sunday.

Pontypridd are hoping to reach the semi-finals of the Genero Adran Trophy for the first time and will hope that this competition again provides some respite from their league form. The Dragons’ 1-0 win over Llanelli Town in the Round of 16 is only of only two victories they have to their name this season and their only clean sheet so far. They remain without a point in the Genero Adran Premier following last weekend’s 5-1 defeat against Swansea City.

The New Saints won a nine-goal thriller against Llanfair United in the Round of 16

TNS have triumphed in the last seven meetings between the two sides, including a 2-0 victory at this stage of the Genero Adran Trophy in 2022/23. Chantelle Teare and Caitlin Chapman both bagged braces in a dominant 6-1 win for the Saints in October’s league encounter at Park Hall.

Former Genero Adran Trophy winners and old foes Swansea City and Cardiff City lock horns at Llandarcy in perhaps the most eye-catching quarter-final clash.

Swansea have won the competition on two previous occasions but have lost in the final in each of the last two seasons. Yzzy Taylor’s side coasted into the quarter-finals with a 4-0 win over Cardiff Met, while they currently sit third in the Genero Adran Premier and won 5-1 away at Pontypridd last weekend.

Cardiff, who lifted the trophy in 2024, were beaten by eventual winners TNS in last season’s quarter-finals so will hope to avoid an exit at the same stage this time around. The Bluebirds are currently second in the Genero Adran Premier – five points adrift of leaders Wrexham but with a game in hand.

The two sides have already met twice in the league this season, with Cardiff earning 3-0 and 3-1 victories. However, Iain Darbyshire’s side have only won once on their last eight visits to Llandarcy.

Cardiff have won both league meetings against Swansea City so far this season

Current Genero Adran Premier leaders Wrexham host Aberystwyth Town at The Rock just one week after the two sides met in a thrilling league encounter.

Mariam Mahmood and Amy Jenkins both netted stunning strikes for their respective sides last Sunday, but it was Rosie Hughes’ brace which proved decisive in a 3-2 win for Wrexham as they moved five points clear at the top of the Genero Adran Premier table.

Jenny Sugarman’s side have now won their last seven games in all competitions, while they were the biggest winners in the Round of 16 with a 9-0 victory over Llandudno in which Mahmood bagged a hat-trick.

Aberystwyth also enjoyed a high-scoring win against second tier opposition in the last round as they triumphed 7-0 at home over Felinheli. The Seasiders are currently sixth in the Genero Adran Premier table, five points off a top half spot.

Briton Ferry Llansawel are hoping to reach the semi-finals for the second consecutive season as they host Barry Town United at The Renewable Centre Stadium.

Ferry edged past Genero Adran South side Cwmbran Celtic in the previous round as Lauren Payne’s stoppage-time strike sealed a 3-2 win. The Reds are currently fifth in the Genero Adran Premier – two points adrift of the top half with a game in hand.

Barry earned a 3-0 win over Cascade to reach this stage and the Linnets are now hoping to reach the semi-finals for the first time in their history. James Fishlock’s side are currently seventh in the Genero Adran Premier, but earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw away at top half side The New Saints last weekend.

The two sides met just two weeks ago in the Genero Adran Premier, when Ferry stormed to a 3-0 victory – which added to their 4-1 away win in October’s reverse fixture.
