Novira Cymru Premier round-up: Ammanford comeback to secure historic victory

Ammanford secured their first Novira Cymru Premier win of the season as they came from behind to earn a 2-1 victory over Holywell Town at the Ammanford Recreation Ground on Saturday.

Holywell took an early lead through their top scorer Florian Yonsian, who brought down Ryan Edwards’ long ball, held off Joe Hopkins and curled beautifully into the top corner via the underside of the crossbar for his sixth goal of the season. Tom Bibby ensured Holywell did not immediately concede an equaliser as he made a wonderful tackle on Callum Thomas, who would have been left with an open goal from Jonathan Evans’ square ball.

Yonsian thought he had doubled his and Holywell’s tally with a cool finish when one-on-one with Oli Williams, but he was deemed to be offside and the goal was ruled out. Jack Tierney nearly did make it 2-0 to the Wellmen moments later, but his header was denied by the crossbar. Yonsian produced another clinical finish from inside the area, but it proved to be frustration for the Ivorian forward once again as the flag was raised for offside.

Yonsian has scored in back-to-back games

Ammanford levelled the scoreline in style nine minutes before half time as Evans produced a dipping volley from distance, which flew over Alex Swindell.

Matthew Fisher completed Ammanford’s turnaround two minutes into the second half as he received Matthew Delaney’s through ball, rounded Swindell and bundled home from close range for his first goal of the season. Williams made a stunning save to deny Owen Davies’ header and Euros Griffiths made a goal-line clearance to prevent Harvey Morris’ effort from finding the net as Ammanford ensured they claimed three precious points and their first ever top-flight win.

Briton Ferry Llansawel claimed their first home win since the opening day as Tom Walters’ penalty secured a 1-0 victory over Colwyn Bay at The Renewable Centre Stadium.

Walters’ penalty was enough to secure their first win since August

Both sides had glorious chances inside the opening half hour as Ferry goalkeeper Will Fuller made crucial saves to keep out efforts from Jack Kenny and Dan Roberts, while Declan Poole made a goal-line block to deny Corey Hurford.

However, Poole fouled Hurford inside the area on the stroke of half time, which meant Ferry were awarded a penalty. Walters stepped up from the spot and slotted past Mark Halstead to put the Reds ahead.

Ferry were reduced to 10 men early in the second half as Ricky-Lee Owen was shown a straight red card for his challenge on Kenny. Bay failed to capitalise on Owen’s dismissal though, as Adam Davies and Roberts fired wide from close range in what proved to be a frustrating afternoon for Michael Wilde’s side. Ferry on the other hand are now up to 11th in the table and are unbeaten in their last three games.

Hussein Mehasseb scored a dramatic late winner as Connah’s Quay Nomads claimed a 1-0 win over Penybont, who suffered their first loss of the season at the Essity Stadium.

Mehasseb’s goal was his first since August

Somehow the match remained goalless up until the 88th minute as Connah’s Quay’s Novira Cymru Premier Player of the Month nominee Callum West rattled the crossbar from distance before Penybont forward Nathan Wood was denied by an outstanding goal-line clearance from Max Woodcock and a number of saves from Chris Renshaw.

It seemed this intriguing second versus third clash was going to end in a stalemate, but Mehasseb had other ideas as the Egyptian international came off the bench and steered the ball home from Harry Franklin’s initial effort to spark wild celebrations and hand the Nomads their fourth consecutive league win. John Disney’s side now move into second-place, leapfrogging Penybont, whose 11-match unbeaten streak came to an end.

The New Saints extended their lead at the top of the Novira Cymru Premier table with an emphatic 9-0 win over Cambrian United at Park Hall.

Saints took just seven minutes to take the lead in Oswestry as Josh Lock tapped home from Rory Holden’s low cross for his sixth goal of the season. Lock turned provider for the home side’s second goal on 14 minutes as his initial effort from Holden’s delivery fell to Brad Young, who applied a simple finish from close range.

Rhys Hughes added a third goal by tapping in from Young’s low cross before Holden also scored from just a yard out as he converted the rebound from Young’s saved shot. Hughes then rounded off a rampant 22-minute spell for the champions as he received a short pass from captain Danny Redmond, cut inside onto his favoured right foot and clinically picked out the bottom corner.

Young saw a looping header denied by the crossbar and Dan Williams struck the post twice with efforts from outside the area, but Saints eventually grabbed their sixth goal as Young clinically fired past Mason Morgan after being slipped through by Hughes.

Young contributed to four of TNS’ goals on the day

Holden joined Young and Hughes in bagging a brace as he rolled into an empty net after Young unselfishly squared the ball for his fellow attacker. Isaac Jefferies perhaps had the pick of the goals from Saints’ impressive display as the substitute, who has only been on the pitch for three minutes, received Zach Nolan’s short pass and curled into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Things went from bad to worse for Cambrian in the 74th minute as substitute Josh Allen made a late challenge on Williams and saw his initial yellow card upgraded to a straight red card following a VAR check. The 2025/26 Novira Cymru Premier Player of the Season Jordan Williams got in on the act late in the day as he curled into the bottom corner with a composed finish. Craig Harrison’s side have now extended their winning run to 11 matches, while Cambrian have conceded nine goals for the second time this season.

Flint Town United continued their impressive start under new manager Danny Holmes as Joe Malkin’s late goal sealed a 1-0 win over Haverfordwest County at the Dynamite Bridge Meadow.

Malkin picked up his third goal of the season after a spell on the sidelines

Jack Flint made a tremendous reflex save to deny Jacob Owen’s low drive which took wicked deflections off Cody Twose and Ben Ahmun, while the Flint goalkeeper also did well to tip away Rhys Abbruzzese’s low free-kick from the edge of the area. Flint captain Harry Owen then made a crucial block inside the six-yard box to deny Ahmun late in the first half.

Owen thought he had put Haverfordwest ahead when he converted the rebound from Dan Hawkins’ saved header, but he was in an offside position and the goal was quickly disallowed. Just when the Bluebirds were starting to ramp up the pressure, midfielder Corey Shephard was shown a straight red card for his late challenge on Namory Kane.

Shephard’s red card did not stop the hosts from creating chances, but their afternoon did end in heartbreak though, as Ifan Knott pushed away Mikey Burke’s cross, but only as far as Joe Malkin, who nodded the ball home to give Holmes’ side back-to-back wins and clean sheets.

Barry Town United moved back up to fourth in the table with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Caernarfon Town at The Oval.

Noah Daley scored the decisive goal for Barry with just 10 minutes on the clock as he received Jack Shaw’s pass and picked out the bottom corner with a clinical strike.

Daley has three goals in his last four appearances

Barry goalkeeper George Ratcliffe pulled off some heroics as the former Cymru U21 international denied Sion Bradley and Zack Clarke with a quickfire double save to keep his side ahead.

Barry had to play the final nine minutes of the match with 10 men after Owen Cuddihy was sent off for a second bookable offence for handball, which stopped a Caernarfon attack. However, Ratcliffe made important saves to deny Harry Charsley and Clarke and ensure Barry took all three points and a clean sheet back to South Wales.

Airbus UK Broughton also returned to winning ways as George Peers’ brace inspired a 3-0 win over Trefelin at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium.

Airbus wasted no time and opened the scoring inside just nine minutes as Jack Parry squeezed the ball through to Peers, who managed to guide his low shot into the bottom corner. Kaiden Cooke doubled the advantage 10 minutes later as the youngster picked the ball up in his own half, drove forward and rolled home past Scott Coughlin for his third goal of the campaign.

Cooke was the 2025 Young Player of the Season in the Novira Cymru North

Peers put the result beyond doubt midway through the second half as Mason Blackwell-Jones’ fierce cross flew past the Trefelin defence and found an unmarked Peers, who was left with one of the easiest goals he will ever score by tapping in from a yard out. Mark Allen’s side are now back into the top half after earning back-to-back home victories, while Trefelin still await their first win of the season.

Joel Edwards scored the only goal as Cardiff Met beat Llandudno 1-0 at the Go Goodwins Stadium to secure back-to-back wins.

Met forward Fumpa Mwandwe fired narrowly wide from the edge of the area before he struck the bar with a cross-turned-shot on the hour mark. Mwandwe would have been frustrated not to have registered an assist moments later as he squared the ball to Sam Snaith, who was left unmarked from nine yards out but could only shoot wide of the post.

The Archers eventually found the breakthrough on 67 minutes as Edwards met Jack Veale’s free-kick and steered his header into the bottom corner for his first goal in over a year.

It was only Edwards’ second start of the campaign following his opening day start

Llandudno had a glorious opportunity to rescue a point with seven minutes remaining as Kieran Smith was presented with a free header from Callum Stephens’ cross, but Smith was unable to hit the target as Llandudno’s 553-day unbeaten streak on home turf in league competition came to an end.
