JD Cymru South round-up | Bluebirds hand themselves survival boost

Abertillery Bluebirds earned another huge result in their bid for survival after edging past Cwmbran Celtic 2-1 at Celtic Park.

A quickfire Ryan Meredith brace gave the Bluebirds a two goal cushion in the first half. Tom Meechan pulled a goal back for Celtic midway through the second half, but Josh Anderson’s side were able to hold on for all three points to leap off the bottom of the table and secure just their second league win of the season.

Jordan Evans and Tom Davies were both on the scoresheet again as Baglan Dragons made it back-to-back victories with a comfortable 2-0 win over Caerau Ely at Evans Bevans.

Both goals came in the second half with Evans opening the scoring in the 71st minute before Davies wrapped things up in the fourth minute of stoppage time as the Dragons creep into the top half whereas Caerau Ely remain in 12th place.

Llantwit Major continued their JD Cymru South resurgence with a 1-0 victory over ten-player Afan Lido at the Windmill Ground.

Lido’s Babucar Sauane received a straight red card midway through the first half, and Major used the advantage perfectly as Joel Woodington fired his side ahead on the hour mark.

Ben Stait’s side secure their third consecutive victory against teams in the top five as they make yet another statement to the other teams also fighting to stay in the division.

Ammanford bounced back to winning ways with a narrow 1-0 win away to local rivals Carmarthen Town thanks to Tristan Jenkins’ sixth goal of the season.

This highly anticipated third versus fifth derby day clash was filled with chances, and after Jenkins had rattled the crossbar from an open net in the first half, the forward made up for his missed chance by firing into the roof of the net with a smart finish.

Carmarthen rued their missed opportunities in the final third, and as a result, suffer their first league defeat since October with Ammanford now closing the gap up to their rivals to just three points.

Trefelin were on the winning side for the fourth time in five matches as Roan Piper’s penalty gave Andy Hill’s side a 1-0 victory over bottom of the table Abergavenny Town.

Piper oozed confidence from twelve yards to score the only goal of the match and send Trefelin up to sixth-place with another impressive performance at Ynys Park. Abergavenny put up a spirited performance, but they remain rooted at the foot of the table and are still 13 points from safety.
