JD Cymru Leagues games to watch | 22-23 September

Following last weekend’s JD Welsh Cup ties, a full schedule of JD Cymru Leagues action returns this weekend. Here are the key games to watch.

JD Cymru Premier – Colwyn Bay v Newtown (Saturday, 2:30pm)

After slow starts to the season, Colwyn Bay and Newtown have both found form in recent weeks to climb up the table.

The Seagulls, currently in ninth, have won back-to-back matches against Penybont and Aberystwyth Town as they continue to adapt to life in the top-flight.

While it is Colwyn Bay’s first season in the JD Cymru Premier, it is Newtown’s 32nd in succession. The Robins have won their last three matches against Cardiff Met, Haverfordwest County and Barry Town United to sit seventh.

Nick Rushton made over 200 appearances for Newtown before signing for the Seagulls this summer, so could be in line to face his former club for the first time.

JD Cymru North – Flint Town United v Holywell (Saturday, 2:30pm)

The Essity Stadium will host a highly-anticipated Flintshire derby on Saturday afternoon, when Holywell Town make the five-mile trip to Flint Town United.

The two clubs are the only remaining unbeaten sides in the JD Cymru North this season and will both be aiming to lift the trophy come next spring.

Last year’s runners-up Holywell have started the new campaign with five successive league wins, scoring 15 goals and conceding just two, to sit top of the table.

Meanwhile, Flint are in third place with four wins and one draw following their relegation from the JD Cymru Premier last term.

The two clubs last met in the first round of the 2018/19 Nathaniel MG Cup, when the Silkmen triumphed 3-2 after extra-time.

JD Cymru South – Abertillery Bluebirds v Llantwit Major (Saturday, 2:30pm)

16th-place Abertillery Bluebirds and 13th-place Llantwit Major will both hope to end poor runs of form when they meet at Cwm Nant Y Groes.

Following promotion from the Ardal South East, Abertillery lost their first five JD Cymru South matches but earned their first point thanks to Rhys Thomas’ 91st-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw against Pontardawe Town two weeks ago.

It will be a first home game in charge for new Llantwit Major boss Ben Stait, who guided his side to a 3-3 draw against Trefelin in his inaugural league game a fortnight ago.

It stopped a run of three successive defeats for the Major, who have only recorded one league victory so far in 2023/24 after a seventh-place finish last season.
