JD Cymru South round-up | Cwmbran Celtic produce late drama on opening night

The new JD Cymru South season got off to a dramatic start on Thursday night as Cwmbran Celtic scored a 96th-minute goal to win 3-2 away at Goytre United.

With the game locked at 2-2 in the closing stages, the Yellows were awarded a penalty in the 84th minute but Lewis Iles saw his spot-kick saved by Conah McFenton. Iles would redeem himself deep into stoppage time though when he grabbed his second goal of the game by turning in Alex Bonthron’s cross from close range.

Briton Ferry Llansawel made an early statement of intent on Friday night when they opened the campaign with a 2-0 victory over last season’s runners-up Llanelli Town. Summer signing Joseph Jones headed in from a corner early in the second half before Tom Walters wrapped up the result with a late penalty following a foul on Jasper Payne.

One of the best individual performances of the weekend came from Liam McCreesh, who scored a hat-trick for Afan Lido in the Reds’ 3-0 home win over newly-promoted Abertillery Bluebirds.

The biggest winners of the opening weekend were Cambrian & Clydach Vale and newly-promoted Caerau Ely, who both triumphed 4-0.

The Cam Army overcame Trefelin as summer signing Jacob Cross scored twice along with Liam Reed and Shane Davies, while the Young Guns dismantled Abergavenny Town thanks to goals from James Williams, Clayton Farrah, Jack Ashford and Adam Coomer.

Fellow newly-promoted side Baglan Dragons also claimed an impressive victory, winning 2-1 away at Pontardawe Town. Tom Davies scored both goals for Carl Clement’s team before a late Jack Fleming own goal.

There was late drama at Lôn Melin Wynt as Carmarthen Town came from behind to win 2-1 against Llantwit Major. Owain Edwards’ first half penalty looked to have earned the hosts all three points, but an 89th-minute equaliser from Cameron Allen before Greg Walters’ 96th-minute winner completed a remarkable turnaround for the Old Gold.

After scoring twice against Abertillery Bluebirds in the Nathaniel MG Cup in midweek, Ammanford’s new signing Lewis Reed added another goal to his tally in a 1-0 win for Gruff Harrison’s side over Taffs Well on Friday night in which Jack Lansdown saved a penalty.

Weekend results in full:
