JD Cymru Leagues games to watch | 23-24 February

After last weekend’s JD Welsh Cup quarter-finals, a full JD Cymru Leagues schedule is on the agenda across Friday and Saturday. Here are the key matches to watch.

JD Cymru Premier – Caernarfon Town v The New Saints (Friday, 7:45pm)

The New Saints can take another step closer towards a 16th JD Cymru Premier title with victory over Caernarfon Town at The Oval on Friday night.

Craig Harrison’s side were forced to come back from a goal down to win 5-1 against JD Cymru South leaders Briton Ferry Llansawel in the JD Welsh Cup quarter-finals last weekend and are now looking for their 23rdconsecutive victory in all competitions.

They have won 19 matches in a row in the league and currently hold a 17-point advantage over second-place Connah’s Quay Nomads, meaning the title could be wrapped up as early as the first weekend in March.

Caernarfon are currently sixth in the JD Cymru Premier table, following two consecutive draws away from home against Connah’s Quay Nomads and Cardiff Met to open phase two.

Richard Davies’ side have provided stern tests for TNS so far this season, taking the lead in both of their phase one meetings before the Saints prevailed 3-1 and 2-1 respectively.

JD Cymru North – Mold Alexandra v Airbus UK Broughton (Saturday, 2pm)

Airbus UK Broughton will aim to maintain top spot in the JD Cymru North this weekend but face a tricky away trip to fellow Flintshire side Mold Alexandra.

The Wingmakers continued to set the pace in the division with a 6-0 victory over Prestatyn Town last weekend, which extended their unbeaten streak in the league to 15 matches. They currently hold a two-point lead at the top of the table, but the chasing pack have games in hand.

Mold Alexandra can certainly count themselves in that group, as they sit fourth in the table following a remarkable campaign to date. They sit 10 points behind Airbus, but have played three games fewer.

Steve Monk’s side have won seven out of their last eight JD Cymru North matches, while in Danny Warren they possess one of the most in-form and potent strikers in the division.

The two sides played out an eight-goal thriller in the reverse fixture in December, with Airbus scoring three times in the final 10 minutes to stage an incredible late comeback and win 5-3.

JD Cymru South – Llanelli Town v Cwmbran Celtic (Friday, 7:30pm)

Llanelli Town have the chance to go top of the JD Cymru South table when they host Cwmbran Celtic on Friday night.

Lee John’s side currently trail league leaders Briton Ferry Llansawel by three points, but Ferry don’t play until Saturday afternoon against Ammanford so victory for Llanelli would take them top on goal difference.

Joe Hopkins, Sean Cronin and Josh Allen scored the all-important goals last weekend as the Reds triumphed 3-1 over Taffs Well to make it six games unbeaten in all competitions.

Cwmbran Celtic ended a three-game losing streak last weekend with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Afan Lido thanks to goals from Alex Bonthron and Tom Meechan, and they will now be aiming to climb back into the top half.

This is the first meeting between the two sides this season after their meeting earlier in the campaign was postponed, but both of their league encounters in 2022/23 were close affairs. Llanelli secured a 1-0 win in the first meeting before Sean Cronin’s last-gasp equaliser meant they shared the points in a 3-3 draw.
