JD Cymru South round-up | Llanelli Town go top as title race takes another twist

The JD Cymru South title race was blown wide open at the weekend, with the top three clubs now separated by just three points.

Briton Ferry Llansawel led the table going into the weekend, but the Reds were beaten 2-1 away at Ammanford on Saturday afternoon.

Lewis Reed continued his red-hot form with a quickfire double early in the second half to put Ammanford ahead, as he reached 19 league goals for the season.

Ferry provided a swift response as Josh Bull pulled a goal back, but the visitors could not find an equaliser as Ammanford earned a fifth consecutive league win to move just three points behind top spot in third place.

It is Llanelli Town who now sit at the summit of the JD Cymru South on goal difference as their 3-2 home victory over Cwmbran Celtic on Friday night drew them level on points with Briton Ferry.

Curtis Hutson opened the scoring after 36 minutes at Stebonheath by tapping home the rebound from Tom Hillman’s effort which struck the post, but in-form Celtic forward Tom Meechan finished from close range to make it 1-1 soon after te hour mark.

Both sides traded blows again as Ethan Cann returned to the scoresheet for the Reds for the first time since November before Alex Bonthron instantly equalised for the away side from the penalty spot.

Llanelli’s winning goal arrived three minutes from time as Josh Allen produced a composed finish through the legs of Lewis Watkins.

Abertillery Bluebirds stunned Carmarthen Town with a 2-0 victory at Cwm Nant Y Groes on Saturday afternoon to give them a glimmer of hope in the relegation battle.

The decisive moments came within the space of two minutes midway through the second half as lightning counter attacks allowed Ryan Meredith and Curtis Methven to slot home beyond Lee Idzi. The Bluebirds are now eight points adrift of safety.

Cambrian & Clydach Vale made it three consecutive wins in the JD Cymru South with a 2-0 victory over nine-man Abergavenny Town at Pen-Y-Pound.

The Pennies were reduced to 10 men in the 34th minute as Blake Tovey was shown a straight red card, but the game remained goalless until the 84th minute when Liam Eason fired Cambrian ahead.

Abergavenny were reduced to nine men five minutes later as captain Joe Cashman was dismissed for a second bookable offence, before Eason wrapped things up for the visitors by grabbing his second of the match in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

Goytre United ended their six-game winless streak with a 2-1 victory over fifth-placed Afan Lido at Princess Margaret Way.

All the goals came inside the first half, with in-form Goytre striker and captain Jordan Edwards opening the scoring with a slotted finish into the bottom corner in the 15th minute.

Kyran Steadman scored his first goal for 18 months to double his side’s lead nine minutes later, before Liam McCreesh pulled a goal back in the 31st minute for Lido with a calmly converted penalty.

McCreesh had the chance to level the scoreline with another spot-kick just before half-time, but this time he dragged his effort wide of the post, which proved costly as Goytre held onto the lead to take home all three points.

Llantwit Major were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Taffs Well after letting a two-goal advantage slip at Rhiw Dda’r.

Ben Stait’s side stormed into the lead thanks to strikes from Joel Woodington and Ioan Emanuel in the opening half hour.

The Wellmen gave themselves a lifeline through Rob Jones’ finish just before the break and they eventually got back on level terms through captain Vaughn Fowler, who bagged his fifth league goal of the season.

Llantwit Major move level on points with 13th-place Pontardawe Town, but remain in the bottom three via goal difference.

Trefelin extended their unbeaten league run to five matches after drawing 1-1 with Baglan Dragons at Ynys Park.

Both goals came inside the first ten minutes, with 19-year-old starlet Roan Piper reaching the 15-goal mark for the season by firing the home side ahead, before Dragons captain Lewis Holmes headed home from Josh Evans’ cross to level the contest.
