Denbigh Town celebrate centurions

Denbigh Town are celebrating the contributions of three players who have passed the century mark over the last year.

Paul Fleming, Billy Holmes and Sion Jones are the trio who have reached the appearance milestone, and manager Dewi Llion is quick to sing their praises.

“Paul was playing for a local team where I saw him played felt instantly we had to sign him, and he was made captain of the team shortly after,” says Dewi of Fleming, who made his debut in October 2019 and now has 118 appearances to his credit. “At the age of 37, he’s still the fittest in the team, constantly pushing himself to be better. He’s a player that you hope younger players look up to and replicate.”

Another senior player, Holmes’ 100 matches have come across more than one stint with Denbigh, having made his debut in 2013, and he now has 143 appearances on the books.

“He was one of my first signings when I took over as manager,” says Dewi, “and has been an ever-present figure in the team ever since.”

Jones made his debut as a 17-year-old back in 2018, and his family are all involved with the club too – with dad Rhodri a season-ticket holder, mum Jayne and nan Jean helping in the kitchen, and his late grandad Willie fondly remembered as a keen volunteer. Not only that, little sister Eiri is making her mark in the juniors.

“Having come through the youth set-up at the club, Sion took a year out to play tier 5 football, which certainly toughened him up,” says Dewi. “It’s a remarkable feat for someone so young to have been involved in so many games. He’s Mr Reliable, never has a bad game, and someone we have already pinpointed as a future captain of this club.”
