Ammanford cohort to run to Afan Lido fixture in memory of Ioan Evans

A quintet of runners will run from Ammanford to Afan Lido for the JD Cymru South fixture between the two sides at the Marston’s Stadium on Sunday, in memory of Ioan Evans.

Ammanford AFC president Rhodri Jones, former captain Rhys Fisher, striker Matthew Jones, ex‑commercial manager Jason Pocock and Morriston Town physio Richard Pelta will take on the challenge.

Evans tragically passed away earlier this month, which brought back harrowing memories in Ammanford of the heartbreaking loss of Jac Lewis in 2019.

The Jac Lewis Foundation, a charity committed to supporting mental health and wellbeing, was set up soon after and the group’s challenge will raise money for the Foundation alongside Big Moose – a suicide prevention charity chosen by Ioan Evans’ family.

“We wanted to show our support to the family and friends of Ioan,” Rhodri Jones said. “We understand first-hand what loss feels like, and while the support we received couldn’t fill the enormous void left by Jac’s passing, it was a huge source of comfort for us in those dark days and we were incredibly comforted by the fact that the close knit Welsh football community rallied around us in our hour of need.

“We hope that all at Afan Lido, along with Ioan’s family and friends, understand that the hands of friendship will always be there from us at Ammanford.”

The team will begin their run at 6:30am on Sunday, at the Recreation Ground in Ammanford, before making their way up the Amman Valley to Brynamman, Ystradgynlais, Pontardawe, Rhos, Neath, and Briton Ferry, before completing the 30‑mile journey in Port Talbot in time for the 2pm kick-off.
