Andy Hill praises ‘massive’ Trefelin win over JD Cymru South title rivals Cambrian United

Trefelin manager Andy Hill believes his side’s JD Cymru South promotion push is ‘picking up pace’ after a hard-fought victory over Cambrian United last Friday saw them close the gap on the league leaders to a single point.

Second-half strikes from Jasper Jones and Tyler Brock at The M&P Group 3G sealed an impressive 2-0 triumph for Tref and brought an end to Cambrian’s 100 per cent home record.

“It’s huge to come up here and to play against a side as good as Cambrian,” Hill said. “We knew what we wanted to do and the players’ application was absolutely spot on, and they deserve all the credit.

“It’s just a massive win, especially the clean sheet, which we’ve been working on. We’ve been trying to improve and it’s coming along nicely.”

Cambrian United piled on the pressure in search of a route back into the game, but their attempts were met by a disciplined Trefelin defence, who stubbornly held out to claim a fourth consecutive clean sheet in the JD Cymru South.

Trefelin’s attacking acquisitions may have dominated the headlines over the summer, but their hard work in shoring up defensively is now equally apparent and has been key to the side maintaining their status as the JD Cymru South’s only unbeaten team away from home.

“We identified last year that we weren’t keeping enough clean sheets,” acknowledged Hill. “Scott Coughlin has been huge for us since coming in; he won the Golden Glove last year and we’ve worked on a structure that is working for us at the minute.

“It’s tough in this league as the transitions are so quick and so often it’s very hard, but we know if we keep clean sheets we can score with the quality at the top end of the pitch.

“At the beginning of the season, we brought a nucleus of players who were going to take time to gel and were adapting to a different style. We had a slow start and now we seem to be picking up pace.”
