JD Cymru Leagues games to watch | 18-19 August

Discover this weekend’s key fixtures across all three divisions as the early rounds of games continue to throw up some enticing match ups.

JD Cymru Premier – Penybont v Haverfordwest County (Friday, 7:45pm)

Following their adventures in European competition this summer, Penybont and Haverfordwest County will be keen to make qualification a regular occurrence.

The Bont achieved their highest ever JD Cymru Premier finish last season by placing third and they started the new campaign with a 3-1 away win at Newtown – summer arrival Chris Venables netting twice.

Haverfordwest kicked off the season with a goalless draw on home turf against Pontypridd United, with goalkeeper Zac Jones starring for the Bluebirds as he made a string of fine saves to maintain his clean sheet.

Penybont won 3-2 when these two sides met at the SDM Glass Stadium last season, before Tony Pennock’s side earned revenge with a 2-1 victory at Ogi Bridge Meadow in the reverse fixture.

JD Cymru North – Ruthin Town v Flint Town United (Friday, 7:45pm)

After suffering relegation on the final day of the 2022/23 JD Cymru Premier season, Flint Town United have made a strong start to life back in the second tier with a pair of 2-1 home wins over Denbigh Town and Prestatyn Town.

Friday night sees a first away trip of the league campaign for Lee Fowler’s side as they journey to Ruthin Town, who finished fifth in the JD Cymru North last season.

Phil Hudson’s team have begun 2023/24 with four points from three matches, losing to Mold Alexandra on the opening weekend before a win over Prestatyn and a draw against Gresford Athletic.

The two clubs last met in the Nathaniel MG Cup third round last season, when Flint emerged as 3-1 victors at the Memorial Playing Fields.

JD Cymru South – Afan Lido v Ammanford (Friday, 7:30pm)

Behind current JD Cymru South leaders Briton Ferry Llansawel, Afan Lido and Ammanford are the other two teams in the division to record three wins from the first three matches of the season.

Lido have beaten Abertillery Bluebirds, Caerau Ely and Abergavenny Town so far, scoring eight goals and conceding just two. Veteran Liam McCreesh has led the charge, netting on four occasions.

Following a 1-0 win over Taffs Well on the opening weekend, Ammanford have become late-goal specialists – coming from behind to beat Abertillery Bluebirds 3-2 before staging another impressive turnaround to triumph 2-1 away at Caerau Ely last weekend.

Paul Evans’ team won 2-1 when the two clubs met at Princess Margaret Way last season, before a Mathew Fisher hat-trick helped Ammanford to a 4-2 victory in the reverse fixture at the Rec.
