JD Cymru Leagues | Midweek preview

The JD Cymru Premier returns on Tuesday evening following a weekend of JD Welsh Cup ties on which all except one of the top-flight clubs in action progressed to round three.

The only side knocked out were Caernarfon Town, who were beaten 4-1 by Connah’s Quay Nomads at the Essity Stadium.

The Cofis will hope to bounce back when they host Aberystwyth Town tonight, with the Seasiders needing a 95th-minute winner from substitute Steffan Davies to beat Pontardawe Town 2-1 in the cup on Saturday.

Caernarfon currently sit fourth in the table while Aberystwyth are bottom. Two goals each from Zack Clarke and Adam Davies earned Richard Davies’ side a 4-2 win when the two teams met at Park Avenue in September.

Newtown will be targeting an eighth straight league victory when they visit Cardiff Met – the team that their impressive winning streak started against at the beginning of September.

Chris Hughes’ side sit third in the JD Cymru Premier table and earned an emphatic 6-0 win over Felinheli in the JD Welsh Cup on Saturday.

Met are currently in seventh place but know that a point will lift them into the top six with Bala Town not playing until Wednesday. The Archers were 4-0 winners against Cwmbran Town at the weekend.

There will be live Sgorio online coverage of the game between Barry Town United and Pontypridd United at Jenner Park.

Both clubs were 6-0 winners in the JD Welsh Cup at the weekend, with Barry triumphing over Porthcawl Town Athletic and Pontypridd getting the better of Abertillery Bluebirds.

However, Steve Jenkins’ side have lost their last three league matches, slipping into the relegation zone in the process. Meanwhile, the Dragons’ 2-0 win over Haverfordwest County 10 days ago was their first league win in six games since a 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture against Barry.

Penybont have suffered back-to-back league defeats against Connah’s Quay Nomads and TNS to slip to fifth in the table and now make the trip to Haverfordwest County after a 3-0 cup win at Cwmbran Celtic.

Tony Pennock’s side needed a penalty shootout to knock out Baglan Dragons on Saturday afternoon and have only won two of their 11 league matches so far this season to sit in ninth place.

Goals from Lewis Harling and Kane Owen helped Penybont to a 2-0 victory when the two clubs last met in August, but Bont have failed to win on their last two visits to Ogi Bridge Meadow.

There is also one JD Cymru North fixture on Tuesday night as Prestatyn Town host Airbus UK Broughton.

The 11th-place Seasiders have won all three of their matches since Karl Clair was named as player-manager, triumphing in cup ties against Colwyn Bay and St Asaph City either side of a 4-2 league win over Buckley Town.

Airbus were beaten 1-0 by Flint Town United in their last JD Cymru North fixture to slip to third in the table, but bounced back with a 4-0 JD Welsh Cup victory against Rhos Aelwyd on Saturday.

Wednesday night’s JD Cymru Premier offering sees Connah’s Quay Nomads host Bala Town, with the Lakesiders one of only two sides to beat them so far this season.

Neil Gibson’s men have picked up 22 points from the last 24 available and victory would see them go just one point behind league leaders TNS, who are not in action in midweek due to cup commitments.

Bala ended a three-match losing streak in the league by winning 2-1 against Colwyn Bay 10 days ago and followed that up with a 3-0 cup win over Llandudno at the weekend.
