JD Cymru Leagues round-up: Trefelin close the gap on top spot

Trefelin closed the gap on JD Cymru South leaders Cambrian United to just five points with a 2-1 victory over fellow promotion hopefuls Caerau Ely at Cwrt yr Ala Road on Friday night.

The visitors opened up a two-goal advantage in the first half as Lewys Ware bagged his first goal since November before Caerau Ely’s Jack Pascoe headed into his own net from a corner.

The Young Guns saw forward Tim Parker sent off for a second bookable offence just after the hour mark, but they did pull a goal back through Ollie Redhead’s powerful strike at the near post on 85 minutes to set up a nervy finish for Trefelin.

Those nerves were not helped by Callum Saunders’ sending off in stoppage time after he received two quick yellow cards, but Andy Hill’s side saw out the closing stages to secure their eighth consecutive league win.

Cardiff Draconians earned their first away win in the league since September with a 1-0 victory over bottom of the table Cwmbran Celtic at Avondale Park on Friday.

The decisive moment arrived with 75 minutes on the clock as substitute Ollie Wylie met Sam Cawley’s corner and headed in from just a yard out for his first Dracs goal on his second appearance for the club after joining from Pentyrch Rangers. Nana Baah’s side are back up to fifth in the JD Cymru South table – eight points adrift of the promotion places.

In the JD Cymru North, Flint Mountain moved six points clear of the relegation zone after Owen Cassidy’s brace inspired a 2-1 win over Mold Alexandra at the Go Goodwins Stadium on Saturday.

It was a frantic start to the match as Cassidy opened the scoring for Mountain in the seventh minute, only for Matty Lewis to quickly equalise for Mold eight minutes later.

However, Cassidy doubled his and Mountain’s tally shortly after the half hour mark to restore the hosts’ lead. Both sides received red cards in the second half after Mountain’s Dom Maher and Mold’s Manny Lawal were dismissed, but that did not affect the scoreline as Mountain moved up to 13th in the table.

The visitors were back on level terms in the 68th minute though, as Nathan Brown prodded in from Nathan Doforo’s teasing cross.

Denbigh completed the turnaround seven minutes later as Brown turned provider for Matthew Worrall, who found the net at the back post for his first league goal since September. The Reds remain eighth in the table and are now five points clear of ninth-place Brickfield.
