JD Cymru Premier games to watch | 1-2 September

With all JD Cymru North and JD Cymru South sides competing in the Welsh Blood Service League Cup first round this weekend, the only league action comes in the JD Cymru Premier.

Here are the key games to watch.

Caernarfon Town v Connah’s Quay Nomads (Friday, 7:45pm)

After battling relegation last season, Caernarfon Town have made an impressive start to the new campaign. The Cofis remain unbeaten after four matches and sit second in the table with eight points.

Following wins over Colwyn Bay and Newtown, Richard Davies’ side have drawn with Haverfordwest County and Bala Town over the last week.

It has been a mixed opening to the season for Connah’s Quay Nomads, who have suffered defeats away at The New Saints and Bala Town but triumphed at their new Essity Stadium home against Aberystwyth Town and Newtown. Neil Gibson’s side sit sixth in the table as a result.

The Nomads are unbeaten in their last 11 matches against Caernarfon, staging a remarkable comeback to draw 3-3 from three goals down in their most recent meeting last November. Joe Malkin scored a 94th-minute equaliser that night.

Friday’s game will be a return to The Oval for Noah Edwards, who joined the Nomads this summer after five years with the Cofis.

Bala Town v Penybont (Saturday, 2:30pm)

Bala Town and Penybont are both unbeaten, sitting on eight points each from four matches, ahead of their meeting at Maes Tegid on Saturday afternoon.

They have conceded just one goal each so far, so expect the encounter to be a tight affair between two watertight defences.

The last three games between the two clubs have ended level, with Kane Owen scoring an 88th-minute equaliser to earn Bont a 2-2 draw in their most recent meeting in March.

It will be a first return to Maes Tegid for Bala legend Chris Venables, who scored 117 goals across seven seasons for the Lakesiders before making the moving to Bridgend this summer.

Pontypridd United v Barry Town United (Saturday, 2:30pm)

There is a south Wales derby at USW Sports Park on Saturday afternoon as Pontypridd United host Barry Town United.

Keston Davies scored the only goal of the game as the Dragons picked up their first league win of the season on Tuesday night, triumphing 1-0 away at Aberystwyth Town to move up to seventh in the table.

Eighth-place Barry are still looking for their first league win under new boss Steve Jenkins, having drawn their last three matches since defeat to Bala Town on the opening day. The Linnets led 2-0 against Haverfordwest County on Tuesday night but conceded two late goals to claim only a point.

Ponty quartet George Ratcliffe, Luke Cummings, Clayton Green and Curtis Hutson could all face their former club, while Barry’s new loan signing Harrison Bright spent time with the Dragons last season.
