JD Cymru Premier round-up | Colwyn Bay claim first top-flight win

Colwyn Bay claimed their first ever JD Cymru Premier win by beating last season’s third-place side Penybont 1-0 at the SDM Glass Stadium on Saturday.

Seagulls captain Alex Downes scored the only goal of the game as he met Stefan Edwards’ cross with a pinpoint header in the 76th minute, lifting his side out of the relegation zone in the process.

Barry Town United fell into the bottom two after a 4-1 home defeat to Connah’s Quay Nomads on Saturday.

Steve Jenkins’ side led through the in-form Ollie Hulbert, but a brace for Jordan Davies and one goal each for Jack Kenny and John Disney turned the game around for the visitors who have now won three games in a row.

Newtown made it back-to-back wins with a comfortable 4-0 victory away at Haverfordwest County. Henry Cowans opened the scoring with a long-range free-kick before Aaron Williams netted twice and substitute Zeli Ismail wrapped up the result in second half stoppage time.

Caernarfon Town moved third in the table with a 4-2 win over struggling Aberystwyth Town. It was 2-2 after just 26 minutes at Park Avenue, but the Cofis claimed the three points thanks to Adam Davies’ second half double.

Cardiff Met returned to winning ways with a 2-0 home victory over Pontypridd United on Friday night. Archers forward Sam Jones was sent off before half-time before the visitors were also reduced to 10 men after the break as Jarrad Wright received a second yellow card.

The two goals then arrived in the final 20 minutes at Cyncoed Campus as Tom Vincent headed home and Eliot Evans skilfully finished from the edge of the box.

The New Saints and Bala Town were both in SPFL Trust Trophy action over the weekend – the champions winning 3-0 against Hibernian B and the Lakesiders losing 3-0 to Queen’s Park. They meet at Maes Tegid in the JD Cymru Premier on Wednesday night.
