JD Cymru Premier round-up | Connah’s Quay Nomads hit seven to secure top six spot

Connah’s Quay Nomads were the big winners in the JD Cymru Premier on the weekend as they confirmed their spot in the top six with an emphatic 7-0 victory over Barry Town United at the Essity Stadium.

A statement victory was needed for Neil Gibson’s side after their 21-month unbeaten home record was ended by Haverfordwest County last month.

Jack Kenny’s header as well as own goals from Callum Sainty and Aiden Lewis had the Nomads in a comfortable place before Harry Franklin, Ryan Harrington, Jordan Davies and Michael Wilde rounded off an impressive afternoon in front of goal.

After surrendering a two goal lead, Cardiff Met came back to score two late goals to secure a vital 4-2 victory over Aberystwyth Town to boost their hopes of qualifying for the top six.

Eliot Evans’ double put Met ahead and it seemed the hosts were going to stroll to three points. However, The Seasiders equalised with two goals in ten minutes, both scored by Mark Cadwallader and Alex Darlington.

Luckily for Ryan Jenkins and his side, CJ Craven and Harry Owen restored Met’s two goal cushion late on to claim all three points.

JD Cymru Premier top goalscorer Aaron Williams inspired a Newtown comeback as they defeated Colwyn Bay 4-2 at Latham Park.

The Robins fell behind at half time as Ryan Sears’ opener was cancelled out by strikes from Matty Hill and Udi Akpan, but up stepped Williams with two goals in a minute to edge Newtown back in front.

Louis Robles then finished off a swift counter attack to give Newtown back-to-back home victories and a great chance of securing their place in the top six.

Zack Clarke’s penalty and Sion Bradley’s curling strike completed a second half turnaround for Caernarfon Town as they claimed a 2-1 victory over Pontypridd United at USW Sports Park.

Owain Jones’ sublime acrobatic finish put The Dragons ahead just before the interval and although Ponty were on top for the majority of the game, Andrew Stokes’ men were unable to hold onto their lead as those goals after the break from Clarke and Bradley saw The Cofis pick up their first win in five league matches.

Penybont’s hopes of reaching the top six were dealt a huge blow as they suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of Bala Town at the SDM Glass Stadium.

Paulo Mendes rifled in the opening goal at the near post just moments before Aeron Edwards doubled Bala’s advantage, finishing at a tight angle from goalkeeper Kelland Absalom‘s long ball.

The result means Colin Caton’s side stay in fifth and move six points clear of Bont in seventh with just four phase one fixtures remaining.

The fixture between Haverfordwest County and The New Saints was postponed due to a frozen pitch.
