JD Cymru Premier round-up | Venables provides winner for Penybont on record appearance

Chris Venables scored the only goal of the game on his record 537th JD Cymru Premier appearance as Penybont triumphed 1-0 over Barry Town United on Tuesday night.

It was in the 20th minute that Kane Owen’s throw in was flicked on by Josh Yorwerth and met by Venables, who produced an acrobatic effort to beat Mike Lewis and make it three consecutive wins for Bont.

Aberystwyth Town earned their first JD Cymru Premier win of the season by overcoming Bala Town 1-0 away from home on Wednesday.

Jon Owen’s close-range finish in the 31st minute was the decisive moment, with a late red card for Iwan Roberts compounding Bala’s woes.

The New Saints had to come from behind to retain their status as table-toppers in a 3-1 away win at Caernarfon Town.

Adam Davies put the Cofis in front in just the sixth minute and they led until just before the hour mark when Ben Clark equalised with a precise finish off the post. Jordan Williams completed the turnaround five minutes later before Ryan Brobbel also added his name to the scoresheet.

There was plenty of late drama at Cyncoed Campus as Cardiff Met and Haverfordwest County were forced to settle for a point each in a 1-1 draw.

Kai Whitmore’s penalty in the 62nd minute put the Bluebirds in front, but Lewis Rees equalised in the 88thminute with a close range header. Rees then had the chance to win the game from the penalty spot in stoppage time after Matthew Chubb was fouled in the box, but Haverfordwest goalkeeper Ifan Knott produced an excellent save down to his right.

Connah’s Quay Nomads made it six consecutive wins by triumphing 2-1 over Colwyn Bay at the Essity Stadium, with all three goals coming in an 11-minute period in the second half.

Jordan Davies’ brilliant free-kick gave the Nomads the lead only for Udi Akpan to equalise for the Seagulls, but Callum Bratley’s strike from outside of the box won the game in style.

Newtown also continued their impressive recent form with a 1-0 away win at Pontypridd United which lifted them to fourth in the table.

A superb solo effort from Louis Robles won the game in the 80th minute, before Callum Roberts was sent off for the Robins late on but they held on to claim all three points.
