JD Cymru South round-up: Trefelin triumph in top of the table clash

Trefelin moved just one point behind JD Cymru South leaders Cambrian United with a 2-0 win away at the Rhondda side on Friday night.

The top-of-the-table clash was goalless at half-time, but Trefelin found the breakthrough just six minutes into the second period as Jasper Jones turned home Roan Piper’s cross for his second goal of the season.

Tyler Brock then produced a clinical finish from just inside the area in the 70th minute to double the advantage and ultimately seal victory for the visitors who are now unbeaten in their last eight league games.

Aberystwyth Town scored a dramatic stoppage time winner as they came from behind to triumph 3-2 away at Treowen Stars on Saturday.

Jonathan Evans headed Aber in front three minutes into the second half, but Treowen immediately replied as Chris Hartland latched onto Isaac Richards’ long ball and fired past Reece Thompson.

Richards was sent off for a second bookable offence just after the hour mark, but the hosts nonetheless took the lead on 81 minutes when Lewis Green coolly found the net when one-on-one with Thompson.

Jonathan Evans has scored five goals in three games since returning to Aberystwyth Town on loan

However, there was late drama to deny the Stars what would have been only a second league win of the season. Evans netted his second of the afternoon to equalise for Aber in the 86th minute, before Richie Ricketts curled home a superb free-kick in the third minute of stoppage time to snatch victory.

Treowen finished the contest with nine men as Zak Lewis was a shown straight red card for his challenge on Gwydion Dafis in the closing moments.

Third-place Caerau Ely made it three straight wins with a 2-0 victory away at bottom-of-the-table Cwmbran Celtic on Friday night.

The Young Guns took the lead in style as Ollie Redhead produced a stunning volley into the top corner in the 54th minute, while Matty Kimmins thought he had doubled the lead from close range shortly after but he was deemed to be offside.

It would not be long before the visitors did have a second goal though, as Hywel Davies’ effort from the left hand side trickled past Lewis Watkins at the near post just after the hour mark. Dean Wheeler’s side are now just two points behind league leaders Cambrian, with a game in hand.

Cardiff Draconians’ three-match winning streak was halted as they were held to a goalless draw away at Ynyshir Albions on Saturday.

The Dracs were denied by the woodwork midway through the first half when Luke Davies saw his thunderous free-kick rattle the crossbar, while Dan Bowen thought he had put the visitors ahead on the stroke of half-time with his close range finish – but the goal was ruled out for handball.

The Buns held onto only their second clean sheet of the season in the second half as they claimed a first point since August.

Ammanford and Carmarthen Town shared the points in a 1-1 draw in the first Carmarthenshire derby of the season at the Recreation Ground on Friday night.

Ex-Carmarthen duo Gavin Jones and Alex Giardelli combined to haunt their former club and put Ammanford ahead just before half-time as Giardelli tapped home from Jones’ low ball across the six-yard box.

However, Carmarthen were level just four minutes after the break as Tom Dyson scored his first goal since the opening day with a calm finish into the bottom corner.

It also finished 1-1 on derby day between Afan Lido and Baglan Dragons at the Marston’s Stadium on Friday night.

Lido striker Lewis Reed grabbed his sixth league goal of the season to put his side ahead two minutes into the second half as he met Liam Griffiths’ corner and sent a looping effort over Aaron Ryan. However, the Dragons were level 10 minutes later thanks to Nathan Logan, who netted for the second week in a row to salvage a point.

Llantwit Major earned only their second league win of the campaign as two early goals proved enough to secure a 2-0 home victory over Pontypridd United on Saturday.

Tom Stokes fired Major ahead inside just four minutes with a goal against his former club, before Jack Bevan doubled the advantage seven minutes later with a close range finish from Tom Lillico’s low cross.

Kofi Rowe almost added a third goal for the hosts but saw his powerful effort denied by the crossbar, while Llantwit goalkeeper Ryley Allen made some key saves to keep his clean sheet intact as Karl Lewis’ side leapfrogged Ponty up to 10th in the table.

Newport City dropped points for the second consecutive weekend as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Trethomas Bluebirds on Friday night.

Cole Mace met Harvey Sing’s low ball and slotted into an empty net to put the Steelmen ahead in the 56thminute, but the Bluebirds equalised on 77 minutes as Jon Hood scored from the penalty spot.
