JD Cymru South round-up: Trefelin go top as winning streak continues

Trefelin moved to the top of the JD Cymru South with a 2-0 victory over Ynyshir Albions at Ynys Park on Friday night.

Ynyshir defender Keane Thomas was sent off for a second bookable offence after just 16 minutes and Trefelin quickly made the most of the numerical advantage as Luke Bowen fired home from Roan Piper’s cross to score for the fourth consecutive game. Bowen turned provider for his side’s second goal in the 31st minute as he found Tyler Brock, who slotted past Harry Webber with his low drive.

Tref substitute Callum Saunders was shown a straight red card with 73 minutes on the clock, but Andy Hill’s team saw out the remainder of the match to earn their 12th consecutive league win and move a point clear at the top of the table after Cambrian United’s trip to Ammanford was postponed.

Carmarthen Town reignited their promotion hopes as Liam Thomas’ stoppage-time penalty secured a thrilling 4-3 win over fifth-place Caerau Ely at Cyncoed Stadium on Saturday.

An own goal from Conor McNamara and a first ever JD Cymru South goal for Josh Joda saw Carmarthen go 2-0 up after an hour played in the capital. Tim Parker halved the deficit for Caerau with a close-range header from Ollie Redhead’s cross, but Luke Cummings immediately restored Carmarthen’s two-goal cushion by bundling home from a corner.

Parker produced another clinical finish, this time from Charlie Lewis’ cross to make it four goals in his last three games, before the Young Guns were awarded a penalty and the chance to make it three apiece as Liam Reed fouled Tom McLean inside the area. McLean stepped up and fired past Lee Idzi which looked to have salvaged a point for the hosts.

However, there was even more drama in the sixth minute of stoppage time as Thomas drilled home a penalty of his own to give Carmarthen all three points with virtually the last kick of the game. The Old Gold are now up to sixth in the table and just five points adrift of the promotion places.

Afan Lido eased their relegation fears with a crucial 1-0 victory over Trethomas Bluebirds at Princess Margaret Way on Friday.

Lido were frustrated not to lead at half-time after creating several chances, but they did not have to wait long for the breakthrough in the second half as Brad Flay fired in his first goal since November 2024 just eight minutes after the restart.

Lee Surman’s side held on to end their nine-match winless run in the JD Cymru South and now sit a healthy 10 points clear of the relegation zone, although bottom-of-the-table Cwmbran Celtic do have two games in hand.

Liam Angel scored twice as Pontypridd United earned their third successive league win with a 2-0 victory over Baglan Dragons at USW Sports Park on Saturday.

Angel put the Dragons ahead in the 53rd minute before doubling his and Ponty’s tally with seven minutes of time remaining to put the game to bed. Matthew Driscoll’s side are now up to ninth in the table and will now be eyeing up a top half finish after a challenging campaign.

Newport City claimed back-to-back wins for the first time since September as Kyran Steadman’s late winner sealed a 2-1 victory over Llantwit Major at the Newport Stadium on Friday.

Tom Tweedy put Major ahead inside just four minutes with his first goal since December 2024, but the home side were level shortly before half-time thanks to Clayton Farrah’s finish.

The Steelmen completed the turnaround in the 79th minute through Steadman’s second goal of the season as Sam Houldsworth’s side moved to within six points of the promotion places.

Defeat for Major allowed Treowen Stars to climb up to 10th-place with a narrow 1-0 win over Cardiff Draconians at Bush Park on Saturday.

Dracs duo Nathan Mathias and Efu Kazadi saw their efforts from distance fly narrowly wide early in the first half, but despite the visitors’ pressure throughout the contest, it was the Stars who found the breakthrough through captain Christian Davies in the 72nd minute.

Sam Cawley came extremely close to equalising for the Dracs late in the day, but his cross-turned-shot was denied by the post. Stars goalkeeper Cameron Clarke made some more key saves to ensure his side earned all three points.
