Newtown reach JD Cymru Premier European play-off final

Newtown reached the JD Cymru Premier European play-off final after winning 4-2 away at Bala Town on Friday night.

The Robins are targeting a third successive season in Europe and two goals each from Aaron Williams and Zeli Ismail took them a step closer to achieving that goal.

Naim Arsan’s handball in the box in the 15th minute presented Newtown with the opportunity to open the scoring and while Williams’ penalty was saved by Bala goalkeeper Harri Lloyd, the Robins forward tucked home the rebound.

The hosts levelled 20 minutes later as George Newell poked home following a Newtown defensive mix up, but the Robins retook the lead before the break when Ismail’s flicked effort hit the post and came off Lloyd to go into the net.

Williams scored his second of the game to give his side a two-goal cushion when he met a Louis Robles cross from close range eight minutes after the break. The 29-year-old, who is Newtown’s top scorer this season, picked the right time to end his seven-game goal drought.

Bala had hope of a comeback when Newell grabbed a brace of his own by heading home from Ross White’s cross in the 71st minute, but the visitors restored their two-goal advantage when Ismail’s strike deflected in off team-mate Henry Cowans with 82 minutes on the clock.

For Bala, also beaten in last weekend’s JD Welsh Cup final, it is a disappointing end to the campaign but Newtown will now face either Cardiff Met or Haverfordwest County in next Saturday’s play-off final.
