Penybont suffer extra-time defeat in UEFA Europa Conference League

Penybont are out of the UEFA Europa Conference League after a 3-1 aggregate defeat to Andorran side FC Santa Coloma.

Following a 1-1 draw in Bridgend last week, the second leg finished goalless after 90 minutes but extra-time goals from Ivan Garrido and Cristian Novoa saw Santa Coloma progress.

Rhys Griffiths made one change to the starting line-up from the first leg as Dan Jefferies replaced Lewis Clutton – the same switch made by the Bont boss at half-time at the Brewery Field.

The first half lacked any true clear chances, as the teams continued to look evenly matched after last week’s tight first leg. Penybont looked most dangerous from Kane Owen’s deliveries from dead ball situations, while winger Virgili aimed to create for the hosts.

Santa Coloma came closest just after the hour mark, when a curling effort from Virgili was blocked brilliantly on the line by Mael Davies.

Penybont had a golden opportunity to snatch a late winner in the 89th minute when Chris Venables couldn’t quite tap in at the back post after the goalkeeper had saved well from Josh Yorwerth’s header from a corner.

Extra-time was beckoning but both sides seemed determined to win the tie in 90 minutes. Shaun MacDonald sliced an effort wide for Penybont, while Alex Harris saved well late on to deny the hosts.

The deadlock was finally broken in stoppage time in the first half of extra-time when Penybont failed to clear the danger in their box and Garrido was on hand to smash the ball home.

Bont’s job was made even harder in the final five minutes when Chris Venables was sent off for a second yellow card offence and Santa Coloma capitalised when Novoa’s volley squirmed under Harris in the 120thminute.
