Porthmadog return to the JD Cymru North with emphatic play-off victory over Knighton Town

Porthmadog booked their place in the JD Cymru North for 2026/27 after an emphatic 3-0 victory over Knighton Town in the Ardal North Promotion Play-Off.

The game started at a frantic pace, with neither side able to gain control in the early stages. The Robins squandered two promising opportunities on the counter attack before Port were awarded a penalty midway through the first half.

Captain Cai Jones threaded the ball through to Rhys Alun, who was brought down by a sliding challenge from Knighton defender Shane Sutton inside the area. Osian Evans stepped up and confidently converted the spot kick to the keeper’s left to give Port the lead.

Porthmadog took their one goal advantage into the break and held firm until the closing stages, before Evans turned provider in the 80th minute. His pass found Danny Brookwell, who fired into the bottom right corner to double the lead with 10 minutes remaining.

Osian Evans registered 27 goal involvements in the league after returning from a lengthy injury layoff in January

Port sealed victory in stoppage time as Evans latched onto a clearance from Josh Banks, ran half the length of the field and calmly finished to secure his second goal of the evening and confirm Porthmadog’s return to the JD Cymru North following their relegation in 2024.

“When we moved the ball I thought we played well,” captain Cai Jones told Cymru Sport.

“Knighton, we didn’t know much about them. They’re a very physical, experienced team and they caused us problems, certainly at the back. We knew what to expect in the second half and we managed it well and got the win in the end. We’ve got the club back to where it rightly belongs.”

Ardal North East champions Llanuwchllyn and Ardal North West champions Bangor City 1876 will also compete in the JD Cymru North next season.

Full league compositions for 2026/27, along with season dates and fixture release days, will be confirmed in due course.
