Promotion to the JD Cymru Leagues on the line in Ardal Leagues play-offs

The final two spots in the JD Cymru Leagues for 2024/25 are up for grabs this weekend in the Ardal Leagues promotion play-offs.

Four clubs have already earned promotion to the second tier courtesy of winning their respective league titles.

Ardal North East champions Penrhyncoch and Ardal North West champions Flint Mountain are heading for the JD Cymru North, while Ardal South East champions Trethomas Bluebirds and Ardal South West champions Penrhiwceiber Rangers will play in the JD Cymru South next season.

The play-off action kicks off on Friday 24 May as Newport City meet Cefn Cribwr at the SDM Glass Stadium in Bridgend, with the winner claiming a spot in the JD Cymru South (KO 19:30).

The game will be a repeat of this season’s Dragon Signs Amateur Trophy semi-final, when Newport City won a thrilling tie 4-3 before going on to lift the trophy by beating Penrhyncoch in the final at Latham Park.

Sam Houldsworth’s side have enjoyed a remarkable run of form in 2024, winning 15 of their 17 league games to finish as runners-up in the Ardal South East.

It has been a similar story for Cefn Cribwr, who won eight of their final 10 matches in the Ardal South West to claim second place.

The following day, on Saturday 25 May, Llanuwchllyn meet Llay Miners Welfare in the Ardal North play-off at Maes Tegid in Bala (KO 12:30).

Llanuwchllyn finished third in the Ardal North East but have a shot at promotion after second-place Bow Street withdrew their application for a tier two licence. Nonetheless, Llanuwchllyn won 15 of their final 18 league matches of the campaign so head into the play-off full of confidence.

Llay Miners Welfare are targeting promotion following a second-place finish in the Ardal North West. Mike Gadie’s side won 14 of their final 17 matches of the campaign to pull away from third-place Rhyl 1879.

Tickets to the play-off matches will be available to buy on the gate (cash only), costing £5 for adults and £2 for concessions.
