Caernarfon Town FC made history at Rodney Parade as they claimed the JD Welsh Cup for the first time with a commanding 3-0 victory over Flint Town United FC.

The Cofis produced a blistering start to the final, taking control inside the opening 20 minutes with three decisive goals. Sion Bradley opened the scoring on seven minutes, showing composure to finish after a perfectly weighted through ball split the Flint defence.

Matty Jones doubled the advantage shortly after with a superb free-kick that struck the post on its way in, before Adrian Cieslewicz added a third on 17 minutes, heading home from close range following a well-worked set-piece to put Caernarfon firmly in control.

Flint Town United struggled to recover from the early setback but did create moments of their own, with Connor Roberts producing a key save to deny Michael Burke. At the other end, Jack Flint was called into action on several occasions to prevent the scoreline from becoming more emphatic, notably tipping another Jones free-kick onto the crossbar.

The second half saw a more competitive display from Flint, who briefly had the ball in the net only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. However, Caernarfon remained composed and continued to manage the game effectively, limiting clear opportunities and maintaining their three-goal advantage.

At the final whistle, Caernarfon Town were able to celebrate a landmark achievement, securing a memorable and deserved triumph to lift Welsh football’s most historic trophy.

      67. LEE FOWLER – FLINT TOWN UNITED

Lee Fowler, Flint Town United’s Head of Football, has been doing the press rounds for the Silkmen. Fowler has spoken with BBC Sport Wales about the JD Welsh Cup Final being played during their battle for survival in the JD Cymru Premier.

“This game is a one-off game – don’t worry about the anxiety of the league. This is a really good occasion that every one of us should be proud of. Maybe this has been at the back of their minds. Now we can fully focus on this game and then we can deal with the league next week.

“We know we’re the underdogs and we know everyone expects Caernarfon to win, which is great because there’s no pressure on the players. We’ve just got to enjoy it and the players to be the best version of themselves. We know on our day we can beat any team and we’ve done it.”

      68. RICHARD DAVIES – CAERNARFON TOWN

Caernarfon Town manager, Richard Davies has also been speaking to BBC Sport Wales: “It’s an occasion we want to enjoy and want to embrace it but more than anything we are going there to win and hopefully put our name on the Cup. Just to win the Cup would be something really special and proud but to then get the golden ticket to go to Europe on the back of it and what it means financially. We’ve had a taste of it and once you taste something nice you want a bit more of it.”

      69. SION BRADLEY – CAERNARFON TOWN

Speaking to BBC Sport Wales, Caernarfon’s Sion Bradly said: “It’s a massive occasion, especially for this club getting there for the first time. The games against Flint this season have been tough and I think they’re in a false position in the league as well. It will be a tough game regardless, but hopefully we can get the job done.”

      70. JACK THORN – FLINT TOWN UNITED

If Flint Town United’s Jack Thorn requires any inspiration ahead of Sunday’s JD Welsh Cup Final against Caernarfon Town, he need look no further than his father. Andy Thorn won the English FA Cup with Wimbledon in 1988, as part of the club’s famous ‘Crazy Gang’ who caused one of the biggest upsets in the competition’s history by shocking heavy favourites Liverpool to win the trophy for the first time.

Jack, who was not born until 13 years later, smiles as that final is mentioned: “I woke up on the day we were playing Bangor in the semi-final and my dad said ‘this is where I turn up now, I didn’t turn up anywhere else’ I’ve spoken to him a few times about it and he just said go and enjoy it because a cup final will be one of the best days of your career and you can’t beat them.”

      71. JD WELSH CUP RECORD

This is Caernarfon Town’s first ever appearance in the JD Welsh Cup Final, having lost in the semi-finals on six previous occasions before finally breaking that curse by defeating Rhyl 1879 in this season’s last four.

If the Cofis win on Sunday, they will become the 36th different club to lift the historic trophy and the first ‘new’ winner since Connah’s Quay Nomads won the competition for the first time in 2018.

Flint Town United’s only previous JD Welsh Cup triumph came in 1954, when they won 2-0 over Chester at The Racecourse to lift the trophy. They have never reached the Final again in the 72 years since.

      72. HEAD-TO-HEAD

Caernarfon are unbeaten in the last six meetings between the two sides, winning four matchups in a row before a 1-1 draw in their most recent encounter at the Go Goodwins Stadium in December. The Cofis triumphed 5-2 at the Essity Stadium in the other game between the sides this season.

Perhaps their previous most high-profile clash came in the 2021/22 JD Cymru Premier Play-Off Final, when Caernarfon triumphed 2-1 – Laurie Bell scoring a 120th-minute winner in extra-time – to qualify for the Scottish Challenge Cup.

      73. FLINT’S SEASON SO FAR

It has been an inconsistent campaign for Flint, who have only recorded back-to-back league wins on two separate occasions. The Silkmen have scored the most goals out of any side in the bottom half of the JD Cymru Premier but only rock bottom Llanelli Town have conceded more.

Flint would have hoped to have already secured survival after picking up 11 points from a possible 15 at the start of Phase Two, but they have since earned just two points from four games. The relegation battle will go down to the final day of the season where the Silkmen must match or better Bala Town’s result in order to survive.

      74. CAERNARFON’S SEASON SO FAR

With The Oval undergoing redevelopment, Caernarfon Town have played their ‘home’ matches in Llandudno but nonetheless enjoyed another strong campaign. The Cofis have secured a top six finish in the JD Cymru Premier for the third consecutive season, offering them a potential route into Europe if Sunday’s final does not go their way.

Richard Davies’ side have not been in the best of form since the split, winning only two of their nine matches in Phase Two so far. However, they head to Newport following a 2-0 victory away at Colwyn Bay last weekend which will boost confidence and give them a platform to build on.

The competition was established that season to help uncover the best Welsh talent for the national team and is now the third-oldest domestic trophy in the world game.

      79. MORGAN OWEN – CAERNARFON TOWN
