MATCH SUMMARY
Cymru’s UEFA European Under-19 Championship campaign came to an end with a 3-0 defeat to Denmark at The Racecourse in Wrexham, as the Danes secured third position in Group A and a place in the FIFA U-20 World Cup play-off.
Knowing victory was essential to keep their tournament alive, Cymru started brightly and matched Denmark during an even opening spell. Luke Stretch was called into action early before Joe Lacey tested the Danish defence from distance, but the visitors gradually took control.
The breakthrough arrived on 20 minutes when Denmark captain Olti Hyseni produced a stunning strike from outside the penalty area that flew into the top corner. Denmark continued to threaten, with Alfred GΓΈthler rattling the crossbar, although Cymru finished the half positively as Cruz Allen led a late spell of pressure.
Denmark doubled their advantage four minutes into the second half when Hjalte Lærke curled a free-kick beyond Stretch to put the Danes firmly in control.
Cymru continued to show determination and almost found a route back into the contest. Ollie Bostock drove through midfield to create an opening, while Elliott Myles, Allen and substitute Shea Pita all forced Tobias Breum-Harild into action.
However, Denmark sealed the result on 63 minutes when Hyseni raced clear, rounded Stretch and calmly slotted home his second goal of the afternoon. Stretch produced further excellent saves to prevent the scoreline becoming more emphatic, while Jac Thomas was shown a late red card after receiving a second yellow card.
The result ends Cymru’s involvement in the tournament after three matches on home soil. Denmark’s victory secures a FIFA U-20 World Cup play-off place, while Spain progress to the semi-finals as Group A winners following their 4-0 victory over Germany.
