Genero Adran Premier preview: Wrexham and Aberystwyth Town aim to continue perfect starts

Early Genero Adran Premier leaders Wrexham will aim to make it three wins from three games this season when they travel to The New Saints for a cross-border derby on Sunday.

After a 5-2 victory away at Briton Ferry Llansawel on the opening day, the Red Dragons squandered a two-goal lead against Barry Town United at the Racecourse last Sunday but snatched a 3-2 win courtesy of a late own goal.

TNS made a statement with their 1-0 home win over champions Cardiff City on the opening weekend, but then suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat away at Aberystwyth Town last Sunday.

Lexi Jones scored the decisive goal on both occasions as the Saints sealed a pair of 1-0 wins over Wrexham at Park Hall last season, but the Red Dragons did earn 1-0 and 3-1 victories in the reverse meetings at The Rock.

Aberystwyth Town have also won their first two league matches, with the Seasiders set to travel to Llandarcy to face Swansea City on Sunday.

Rhys Jon James has made the perfect start to life as Aber boss with victories and clean sheets against Pontypridd United (2-0) and The New Saints (1-0), with the club now aiming for three consecutive wins for the first time since April 2023.

Swansea’s fixture against Pontypridd United was abandoned midway through the second half due to poor weather last weekend, but Yzzy Taylor’s side made an impressive start to the campaign with a 4-0 win away at Barry Town United on the opening day.

The Swans won all four of their matches against Aberystwyth last season, scoring a total of 14 goals. Sunday’s hosts are unbeaten in all previous Genero Adran Premier meetings between the two sides.

After getting off the mark last weekend, reigning champions Cardiff City make the short trip to Barry Town United on Sunday.

The Bluebirds responded to their opening day defeat at TNS with a clinical 5-1 victory over Briton Ferry Llansawel last weekend, scoring four goals in the opening 33 minutes.

After a 4-0 home defeat against Swansea City on the opening day, Barry fought back from two goals down to be on the brink of a draw away at Wrexham last weekend before conceding late on to leave north Wales empty handed.

Cardiff won all three matches against Barry last season, earning 3-0 and 3-1 league victories before a 4-0 triumph in the Bute Energy Welsh Cup quarter-finals. Fiona Barry scored in all of those games but she is suspended on Sunday following her red card against Briton Ferry.

Pontypridd United and Briton Ferry Llansawel meet at USW Sport Park, with both sides still searching for their first points of the campaign.

Newly-promoted Ponty were beaten 2-0 at home by Aberystwyth Town on the opening day, before their game against Swansea City last weekend was abandoned in the second half due to poor weather. New goalkeeper Alysha Hawkins has starred so far and may need to be on top form again on Sunday.

Following last season’s second-place finish, Briton Ferry have endured a tricky start to the new campaign – losing 5-2 to Wrexham and 5-1 to Cardiff City. New boss Rhys Thomas continues to embed his summer signings, with 16-year-old Anya Grunewald scoring her first goal off the bench against Cardiff last weekend. The midfielder earned a call-up to the Cymru WU17 squad on the same day.

The two sides have not met since a Bute Energy Welsh Cup clash in 2021/22 when Pontypridd progressed on penalties. Their last league encounter was a 1-0 win for Ferry in May 2021, with seven of the Reds’ starting XI that day still at the club.
