Genero Adran Premier | Opening weekend preview

Reigning Genero Adran Premier champions Cardiff City begin their title defence away to Wrexham on Sunday, live on S4C (KO 17:10).

The Bluebirds will be aiming for another monumental season after storming to the domestic treble last season, but it is a new look squad in the capital after multiple ins and outs.

Iain Darbyshire’s side head into the opening weekend off the back of two defeats in the UEFA Women’s Champions League last week but will have learned plenty from their trip to their Netherlands.

Last season’s third-placed side Wrexham have also gained vital experience abroad this summer following a pre-season tour in the USA. Steve Dale has kept the majority of his squad together heading into the new campaign, while adding Abbie Iddenden, Lizzie Craven and Nat Clark.

Cardiff won all six meetings between the two sides in all competitions last season, including a 2-0 victory in the Bute Energy Welsh Cup final in May.

Last season’s runners-up Swansea City are on the road for their opening fixture as they face Cardiff Met at Cyncoed Campus (KO 14:00).

It was a frustrating season for the Swans in 2023/24 as they lost out on the title to Cardiff City again and were also beaten by the Bluebirds in the Genero Adran Trophy final.

However, somewhat of a new era has dawned at the club, with Jamie Sherwood appointed as manager in the summer and the likes of Danielle Broadhurst, Aimee Deacon and Nia Jones bolstering the squad. A title charge will very much be the aim.

It has also been a transitional summer at Cardiff Met, now under the interim leadership of Chris Baker. The Archers have seen a squad overhaul, with players such as Ellie Preece and Tiggy Webb departing, but Niamh Duggan and India Shanahan are notable additions.

Met secured a 3-1 win in the first meeting between the two sides last season, but the Swans went on to get revenge with a 5-0 win in the Genero Adran Trophy quarter-final and a 3-0 triumph in the league’s reverse fixture.

Newly-promoted Briton Ferry Llansawel mark their return to the top-flight with a visit to Aberystwyth Town (KO 14:00).

Ferry stormed to the Genero Adran South title last season, winning all 12 of their league matches before defeating Llandudno in the promotion play-off, so Rhys James’ side will be hoping to making their mark in the Genero Adran Premier.

Aberystwyth also enjoyed an impressive campaign in 2023/24, as they achieved a top four finish and reached the Genero Adran Trophy semi-finals. Chris Church, a title-winning boss with Swansea City in 2022, is now at the helm at Park Avenue and will aim to get off to a winning start on Sunday.

The last competitive meeting between these two sides came in the 2022/23 Bute Energy Welsh Cup semi-final when goals from Lowri Baker, Megan Kearle and Fleur Jenkins guided Ferry to a stunning 3-0 win.

Barry Town United and The New Saints meet at Jenner Park (KO 14:00), with both sides likely to have top four ambitions after finishing in the bottom half last season.

TNS were the most in-form side towards the end of the last season, winning four consecutive matches on their way to winning the Plate Conference.

The now semi-professional side, led by new head coach Shauna Duffy, have had exciting arrivals this summer, including Cymru international Maria Francis-Jones, youth international Sophie Phillips and defender Tiggy Webb, who starred for Cardiff Met as captain last season.

In contrast to Saints’ form towards the end of last season, Barry suffered four straight losses, which saw them finish in seventh place. The Linnets have welcomed the 2023/24 Genero Adran South Young Player of the Season, Keira Harris to Jenner Park, along with the likes of Grace Corne and Erin Murray.

Barry won both of their home matches against TNS last season, picking up 4-1 and 3-0 victories, but Saints were also victorious in both of their matches on home soil, prevailing 5-0 and 3-0.
