Imi Scourfield on representing Cymru and her breakthrough season at Aberystwyth Town

If you want to see the next generation of Welsh footballing talent, you need look no further than the Genero Adran Premier.

Aberystwyth Town’s Imi Scourfield is flying the flag for the domestic top-flight in the Cymru U19s, alongside Annie Small and Grace Dunkerley who have joined Wrexham and The New Saints respectively from the FAW North Girls Academy in recent weeks.

“I am so grateful for every call-up and pitch experience that I am given,” Scourfield says. “I give my best at every camp I have been involved in to show the coaches the level of playing I am at. I can’t thank Nic Anderson and all the coaching team enough for allowing me to receive my first Welsh cap against Czechia by coming on in the second half and making my second appearance versus England.”

It has been a very eventful first senior season for Imi, with the Seasiders clinching a top-four spot on the last day of Phase One by clinging on for a point in a 3-3 draw against TNS.

And at the tender age of 17, she isn’t even the youngest player in the first-team squad, with 16-year-olds Modlen Gwynne, Lleucu Mathias and Lily Moralee-Hughes also catching the eye.

“It’s been such an incredible season with Aberystwyth full of ups and downs, but we are one team and stuck together which is so important for a small area club,” she says. “It’s a step up to a women’s league as there’s more physicality and the game is quicker but I believe us youngsters this season have dealt with that well.”

Off the pitch, as she continues her A level studies at Ysgol Greenhill in Tenby, she is also excelling in another one of her activities – street dance, where she is world champion in the Under-18 Novice category.

“Dance is something I’ve grown up doing,” she says.

She’s certainly a busy young woman – but she’s fully focused on what she can achieve with Aberystwyth Town as they head into Phase Two, and is excited to test herself again against Cardiff City, Swansea City and Wrexham.

“It’s going to be a challenge – however, we have the capability technically, tactically and physically throughout our squad to overcome those challenges and get the best outcome we deserve as a team,” she says.
