Polly Wild-McGregor targets Genero Adran North title in first season as Connah’s Quay Nomads captain

Being appointed club captain at just 18 years old comes with pressure, but Polly Wild-McGregor is certainly showing no signs of fear in her new role as skipper at Connah’s Quay Nomads.

Wild-McGregor, who already has seven goals in all competitions to her name this season, suceeded Kylie Jones’ as the new Nomads captain in the summer after impressive performances over the past few years for the Flintshire club.

“When I found out I was going to become captain, I felt a bit nervous, but knew I could step up to it,” said Wild-McGregor. “It is a privilege to have the armband, especially with the group of girls we have got.

“I think I have dealt with the responsibility well so far. We have a great culture at present and there are lots of important and exciting things happening behind the scenes.

“I am taking the captaincy in my stride, I am excited to take on the challenges our group will face, and I feel confident that I can continue to be a good captain and role model throughout the season.”

From playing in front of over 9,500 fans at The Racecourse Ground last year to lifting the Genero Adran North U19s title in March, Wild-McGregor has already created many memories during her time at The Nomads, and the teenager is keen to create even more this season.

The Nomads have finished runners-up in the Genero Adran North for the last two seasons, so she is also hoping it will be third time lucky for her side to finally get their hands on the trophy.

“We want to win trophies and get as far as possible in every competition this season and we also want to showcase ourselves against the top teams across the country.”

On her side’s Genero Adran North title ambitions, she continued: “I think we have got to do it this season. The team has a great bond and in my opinion, this is the strongest we have ever been.

“Winning the league is our number one priority and we feel we are ready to make the jump up to the Genero Adran Premier.”

During her time so far as captain of The Nomads, Wild-McGregor has bagged nine goal contributions in five matches, including hat-tricks against both Bangor and Llanfair United in the Genero Adran Trophy and Genero Adran North.

The teenager has been versatile in the 2024/25 season so far, playing in numerous roles in midfield and attack. However, this has not stopped her from being clinical in front of goal as she is now just three away from equalling her scoring tally in senior competition last season.

The Nomads have a strong set of coaching staff, who always teach high standards no matter the scenario, and Wild-McGregor believes the way she has been coached is a pivotal part of her current form and improvement throughout her young career so far.

“I feel I have improved a lot since the beginning of pre-season, especially in attacking scenarios,” she said. “I think being in this environment has also made me a more confident person, which is a great thing especially now that I am captain.

“Being told to be myself and to just enjoy my football is the best advice I am given week in, week out.”
