In September 2023, the Cymru Football Foundation opened a brand-new small-sided 3G in Ystradgynlais thanks to a £200,000 grant from U.K. Government.
The site in South Powys – a pair of concrete tennis courts – was crying out for some much-needed refurbishment due to the surface being in disrepair and affecting football and other training sessions taking place during the winter months.
Through our Fit-for-Future Facilities programme, the development and upgrade of the tennis courts into a small-sided 3G pitch has allowed the football club to train all year round on a high-quality surface and enable the club to grow the number of junior and female teams.
Since the opening of the facility, Ystradgylais AFC have been able to launch two new female football teams through the support of the FAW’s Huddle initiative.
Through the winter, the club’s 300+ members have been able to train week in, week out whilst junior teams have also been able to host fixtures regardless of the weather conditions.
Ysgol Golwg y Cwm have also had regular use of the facility for P.E lessons, sports days and summer festivals.
The 24/25 season will see the facility host girls U6 & U7 fixtures and bring free football sessions for young people to the area.
“This year has been revolutionary for both club and community – we’ve been able to utilise the facility throughout the year for a number of different activities and will continue to do so for years to come.
“Without the work from the Cymru Football Foundation and the new state-of-the-art facilities, we wouldn’t have been able to expand our female provision and provide a safe space for the community to utilise.”
