Novira Cymru Premier round-up: Young hat-trick helps The New Saints maintain lead at the top

Brad Young scored a hat-trick as Novira Cymru Premier leaders The New Saints maintained their six-point lead at the top of the table with a convincing 9-0 win over Ammanford at Park Hall on Friday.

Tom Wright made some solid saves for the visitors early on, but Rhys Hughes’ low free-kick on the edge of the area squirmed under the Ammanford goalkeeper as Saints found the breakthrough in the 14th minute. Young quickly doubled the lead with his first goal of the evening as he met Rory Holden’s teasing cross and found the net with his header off the post.

Young missed a glorious chance from Danny Davies’ low ball moments later, but it was not long until Saints did score their third goal as Holden’s corner flew over a number of bodies and fell to Dynel Simeu, who finished with ease from close range.

Young completed his hat-trick within the first 15 minutes of the second half as he slid in to meet two low crosses from Isaac Jefferies and tapped home on both occasions. The pick of Saints’ goals came from Hughes, who received Holden’s pass from a well-worked corner and fired home with force, leaving Wright hardly any chance of the save.

Jefferies got in on the act with a clever outside-the-foot finish at the near post and Jack Bodenham headed home from Hughes’ corner before Jordan Williams rounded off a terrific display from the champions in style late on as he sent a thumping volley into the roof of the net. Craig Harrison’s side have now scored a staggering 24 goals in their last three league games.

Defeat for Ammanford saw Flint Town United climb out of the relegation zone with a 2-0 victory over Trefelin at Elsey Creative Ynys Park on Friday.

Trefelin goalkeeper Scott Coughlin pulled off a tremendous save to tip Isaac Modi’s powerful effort onto the post in the first half, but Coughlin was shown a straight red card in the 57th minute for bringing down Lassana Mendes inside the area. Flint were awarded a penalty as a result and Belgian forward Tunde Owolabi dispatched his spot-kick into the bottom corner.

Owolabi has scored four goals in Flint’s five games in all competitions since Holmes took charge

Ben Hughes hit the crossbar with a dipping volley for the away side, but Flint did not have to wait much longer for their second goal as Owolabi grabbed his second of the evening by steering the ball into an empty net when meeting Harry Owen’s header back across the six-yard box. Flint have now won three out of their first four league games under new boss Danny Holmes.

George Peers starred once again as Airbus UK Broughton came from two goals down to strengthen their place in the top half with a 3-2 victory over Cambrian United at the M&P Group 3G on Friday.

Cambrian took the lead inside just six minutes as Cam Strinati’s diagonal ball flew over the Airbus defence, including goalkeeper Louis Fallon, and struck the leg of Jarrad Wright, who scored his first goal of 2026. Peers had a glorious chance to bring Airbus immediately level when he nutmegged Wright and raced through on goal, only to drag his effort wide of the target from just a few yards out.

The central defender marked his return from suspension with a goal

Josh Beecher netted his first ever senior goal in Welsh football with a beautiful strike into the top corner to double Cambrian’s lead before the current Novira Cymru Premier top scorer Peers made amends for his earlier miss to half the deficit for the visitors in first half stoppage time as he brought down Kieran Evans’ long ball and slotted into an empty net with Kelland Absalom way off his line.

Airbus needed just the first three minutes of the second half to find their equaliser as talented teenager Kaiden Cooke retrieved a loose ball, skipped straight through the Cambrian defence and planted a clinical effort into the top corner, leaving the home side stunned.

The Wingmakers completed their turnaround in the 55th minute thanks to Peers, who volleyed into the net from close range after meeting Oliver Lanceley’s header down to score his 14th league goal of the season already. Fallon then made a crucial one-on-one save to deny Liam Eason as Airbus saw out the final half hour to make it four wins from their last five matches.

Haverfordwest County claimed their first away win of the season as they triumphed 3-1 against 10-player Barry Town United at Jenner Park on Saturday.

Rhys Abbruzzese opened the scoring for Haverfordwest four minutes before half time as he controlled a loose ball on the edge of the area and sent a powerful effort through a crowded box, which perhaps blocked George Ratcliffe’s vision when the Barry goalkeeper went to make the save.

Abbruzzese’s opener was the difference for most of the second half, but the Bluebirds carved out a crucial second goal to take a step closer to victory as Jacob Owen released Corey Shephard, who poked home from a tight angle. Things went from bad to worse for Barry as soon as Haverfordwest started celebrating Shephard’s goal as left-back Owen Cuddihy was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Noah Daley gave Barry a lifeline when he slammed the ball home from close range after Haverfordwest failed to clear Mikey George’s free-kick, but the visitors restored their two-goal advantage immediately to ensure they went home with all three points as Greg Walters laid the ball off to Ben Ahmun, who scored from inside the six-yard box for his third goal of the season.

Cardiff Met became the first team to take points off Colwyn Bay away from home as both teams played out a 2-2 draw at the Blue Turtle Arena on Saturday.

Met took the lead in sumptuous style with 21 minutes on the clock as Aaron Wildig latched onto Fumpa Mwandwe’s perfectly weighted pass and squared the ball for Sam Snaith, who netted easily from close range to finish off a slick team move.

Colwyn Bay soon found themselves a man down too, as Mwandwe intercepted Lewis Sirrell’s pass and was brought down by Ryan Astles, who was originally shown a yellow card, but saw his card upgraded to red following a VAR check for the denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity. That seemed to have given Met a significant advantage at half time, but Bay were level just four minutes after the restart as Snaith headed the ball into his own net when trying to clear Josh Williams’ corner.

Snaith cancelled out his opening goal by turning the ball into his own net

The Seagulls then completed a shock turnaround from another corner shortly past the hour mark as Sam Hart’s curling delivery flew over Arron Davies and found the net via the post. Jordan Davies thought he had added a third goal for the hosts eight minutes later with his low drive into the bottom corner, but the striker was deemed offside when running onto Callum Bratley’s pass and the goal was ruled out.

Bay tried to hold onto their lead despite the numerical difference, but Met eventually hit back and made it two apiece as Snaith did well to control Joel Edwards’ pass and lay the ball off to Jasper Payne, who sent a neat first-time finish past Mark Halstead to salvage a point for the Archers.

Payne now has eight goals in the Novira Cymru Premier

Connah’s Quay Nomads secured their sixth straight league win with a 2-0 victory over Llandudno at the Essity Stadium on Saturday.

The Nomads made a fast start and remarkably took the lead inside just 25 seconds as Callum West received Harry Franklin’s lay-off and struck into the bottom corner for his seventh goal of the season.

Llandudno’s comeback task was made extremely difficult shortly before half time as Jayden Lloyd was shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Frankie Deane. Joel Torrance made some impressive saves to keep the scoreline at just 1-0, but eventually the Nomads found a crucial second goal as West returned the favour to Franklin with a clever through ball, which allowed Franklin to slot into the far corner.

Franklin produced a composed finish to double the Nomads’ lead

Max Woodcock had a goal disallowed for offside when prodding in from West’s cross, but John Disney’s side comfortably saw out the remainder of the match to maintain pressure on The New Saints at the top of the table ahead of their meeting with the league leaders next weekend.

Harry Charsley scored twice as Caernarfon Town earned back-to-back league wins with a 3-1 victory over Briton Ferry Llansawel at The Oval on Friday.

Sion Bradley scored for the third game running with a low drive into the bottom corner before Charsley fired home from Osian Evans’ cutback as the Cofis opened up a two-goal lead inside 31 minutes.

Charsley all but confirmed victory for the Cofis with 19 minutes remaining as the former Ireland U21 international met a loose ball from Evans’ deflected pass and placed another clinical effort into the far corner.

Charsley joined Caernarfon as a free agent earlier this month

Ferry were initially denied a consolation goal in stoppage time as Luke Bowen’s tap in from Tom Walters’ header back across goal was disallowed for offside, but following a VAR check, Bowen would get his name on the scoresheet. Caernarfon remain fourth in the table, while Ferry drop to 12th-place.
