JD Cymru South round-up | Late Ammanford comeback stuns title challengers Llanelli Town

There was late drama at Stebonheath on Boxing Day as Ammanford came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over JD Cymru South title challengers Llanelli Town.

Lee John’s side made the perfect start to the game when captain Joe Hopkins opened the scoring after just eight minutes, but a straight red card for Sean Cronin in the 75th minute opened up an opportunity for Ammanford to get back into the game.

Substitute Mark Jones scored the equaliser with four minutes of the 90 remaining before Lewis Reed found the net in stoppage time to complete a remarkable comeback for the visitors.

Defeat for Llanelli allowed Briton Ferry Llansawel to extend their lead at the top of the table to five points after they edged past Baglan Dragons 2-1 at Evans Bevans Playing Fields.

Tom Davies grabbed his fifth goal in four games to put the Dragons ahead on the half hour mark, but the hosts were outdone by two goals in 12 minutes after break as Kris Evans and Morgan Wright found to net secure a fourth straight win for Ferry.

There was extraordinary drama in the final JD Cymru South before Christmas as Cambrian & Clydach Vale triumphed 4-3 away at Cwmbran Celtic.

It was 2-2 at the break at Celtic Park as Lewis lles levelled the encounter on the stroke of half-time, before Jay Woodford’s penalty put the visitors ahead on 73 minutes.

Celtic got a penalty of their own six minutes into stoppage time and Alex Bonthron converted it to seemingly secure his side a dramatic point, but there was one more twist as Dave Vincent netted two minutes later to earn victory for the Cam Army in remarkable fashion.

The points were shared in a crucial clash at the bottom of the table on Boxing Day between Abertillery Bluebirds and Abergavenny Town as Zak Mitchell’s stoppage-time strike cancelled out Kyle Williams 55th-minute opener in a 1-1 draw at Cwm Nant y Groes.

Both sides had only won one league game each all season ahead of their meeting and that record continues, while they are now even further adrift of safety following Trefelin’s 2-1 win over Afan Lido.

It was a crucial victory for Andy Hill’s side against their fourth-place neighbours, with Tref now nine points clear of the relegation zone.

They stormed into a 2-0 lead at the break thanks to a brace from teenager Roan Piper and while Liam McCreesh pulled one back for Lido in the 90th minute, it only proved to be a consolation.

Third-place Carmarthen Town had to settle for a point in a 1-1 draw against Pontardawe Town at the LHP Stadium.

In a scrappy affair which saw seven yellow cards shown, an own goal from Old Gold goalkeeper Lee Idzi cancelled out Brad Gibbings’ clinical finish.
