JD Cymru South round-up | Briton Ferry extend lead at top of the table with comfortable win

Briton Ferry Llansawel made it six wins in seven games in the JD Cymru South by triumphing 3-0 over Abergavenny Town on Friday night.

Tom Walters and Jasper Payne gave Ferry a two-goal cushion at the break before Josh Bull added a third shortly after the hour mark to round off an impressive night for the Reds.

Ferry  extended their lead at the top of the JD Cymru South table to nine points after both Carmarthen Town and Llanelli Town dropped points.

The Old Gold suffered their heaviest league defeat of the season as they were beaten 4-1 by Afan Lido at Princess Margaret Way.

17-year old star Ieuan Owen got Lido off to a flying start as he opened the scoring after just two minutes, but his strike was swiftly cancelled out by Noah Daley in a manic opening 10 minutes.

However, Owen restored Lido’s lead on the stroke of half-time before the Reds firmly took control of the game after the break. Liam McCreesh added a third before a late own goal from Scott Tancock.

Llanelli conceded a 92nd-minute equaliser to draw 2-2 with in-form Trefelin at Ynys Park, but did move back up to second place with a point.

Lee John’s side appeared to be heading for victory after goals from Curtis Hutson and debutant Danny Williams completed a second half turnaround to cancel out Roan Piper’s opener, but Piper struck from range in stoppage time to level the contest in dramatic style.

Taffs Well were the biggest winners of the weekend in the JD Cymru South as a late flurry of goals saw them triumph 6-2 over Cwmbran Celtic Rhiw Dda’r on Saturday.

Wellmen skipper Vaughn Fowler bagged a brace to put his side ahead after Tom Meechan had opened the scoring for Celtic, but it was 2-2 at half-time as Alex Bonthron calmly converted from the penalty spot.

Visiting defender Sam Powell was sent off for a second bookable offence early in the second half and Taffs Well took full advantage of having an extra man.

The returning Jack Fox came off the bench after to score twice, either side of a goal from fellow returnee Sam Johnson, before another substitute Cam Gauci got in on the act in stoppage time.

Baglan Dragons comfortably secured their fourth consecutive win by beating ten-man Abertillery Bluebirds 3-0 at Cwm Nant Y Groes.

Brett Morgan’s red card midway through the first half gave the Dragons the impetus and they took the lead seven minutes later through Tom Davies’ header. Quick-fire goals at the start of the second half from substitutes Harry Davies and Tom Randall made it a comfortable victory.

Fifth-place Ammanford made it back-to-back victories by narrowly defeating Pontardawe Town 2-1 at the Rec in a game which saw three penalties taken.

Tom Pratt scored his first goal of the season to give the hosts a dream start after eight minutes, while Lewis Reed converted from the spot to double the advantage in the 73rd minute.

Ponty captain Ryan Kostromin scored a penalty of his own five minutes later to half the deficit, before Mark Jones saw his effort from 12 yards saved by Filip Lisczyk as he failed to restore Ammanford’s two-goal lead.

Ollie Redhead struck an 80th-minutewinner as Caerau Ely ended Llantwit Major’s three-match winning run with a 3-2 victory at Cwrt yr Ala Road.

Hywel Davies and Liam Bishop put the Young Guns two goals to the good after an hour of play, but they were pegged back courtesy of quickfire finishes from Tom Walbeoff and Matty Kimmins.

Yet there was to be more drama as Redhead struck with 10 minutes remaining to lift Caerau Ely into the top half.

The points were shared at the M&P Group 3G as Cambrian & Clydach Vale and Goytre United played out a 1-1 draw.

Liam Reed found the breakthrough for the hosts just before the interval, but Keane Watts kept up his fine goalscoring form to rescue a point for Goytre midway through the second half.
