JD Cymru South round-up | Trundle double inspires Trefelin to victory

Trethomas Bluebirds maintained their 100% record in the JD Cymru South with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Taffs Well on Friday night.

All of the Bluebirds’ goals arrived within the first 21 minutes of the match and it was defender Will Bevan who opened the scoring with his header from Lee Baldock’s corner.

Ethan Edwards scored for the third consecutive match after finishing off a swift counter attack before star striker Gareth Tedstone added a third with his fifth goal of the campaign.

The Wellmen produced an improved performance in the second half, but the damage was already done, seeing the Bluebirds maintain top spot and extend their winning run to six matches in all competitions.

Veteran striker Lee Trundle bagged a brace to inspire Trefelin to a 3-1 comeback victory over Llantwit Major at Ynys Park on Friday.

Major held a first half lead thanks to Josh Morgan’s 27th-minute strike, but a quickfire brace from Trundle midway through the second half turned things around.

The 47-year-old forward then added an assist to his tally in the 76th minute as he set up Roan Piper – 28 years his junior – who put the game to bed with his neat finish. Trefelin are now second in the table having won three out of their first four matches.

Goytre United forward Keane Watts scored a hat-trick for a second consecutive match as his side conceded a stoppage time equaliser in a 3-3 draw at home to Pontypridd United.

Liam Eason continued to shine for Pontypridd as his brace put the visitors two goals to the good inside 18 minutes, but Watts grabbed two quickfire goals of his own to level the contest by half-time.

The 25-year-old was on target again to complete his treble in the 70th minute, which appeared to be the winning goal until Ponty substitute Owen Young netted in the sixth minute of stoppage time to salvage a point for his team.

Ammanford were rocked by Gruff Harrison’s resignation after 12 years as manager last week, but they began life without him with a 2-0 win away at Baglan Dragons on Sunday.

After a goalless first half, the breakthrough arrived seven minutes after the break when veteran Euros Griffiths turned in Adam John’s free-kick at the post.

John was again the provider for the second goal, crossing for Tristan Jenkins to finish and wrap up Ammanford’s first win of the season.

Cwmbran Celtic also picked up their first victory of the campaign by triumphing 1-0 over Penrhiwceiber Rangers at Glasbrook Field.

Jude Bull scored the all-important goal on 43 minutes as he fired home from a loose ball following a free-kick delivered into the area.

It was a first JD Cymru South goal for the 17-year-old, whose brother Josh also found the net in Carmarthen Town’s 1-1 draw away at Llanelli Town on Friday.

The Reds were reduced to ten men just before half-time as Kurtis Rees was shown a second yellow card, but they took the lead on 57 minutes when captain Joe Hopkins latched onto a loose ball and calmly tucked away his second goal of the season.

Bull equalised for Carmarthen 13 minutes later, meeting Noah Daley’s cross at the back posts to ensure that the points were shared on derby day.

Newly-promoted Newport City continued their unbeaten start to the JD Cymru South season with a 2-1 comeback victory over Caerau Ely at Cwrt yr Ala Road.

The hosts went ahead with 18 minutes on the clock as Liam Bishop scored his second goal of the season, but Ethan Wynne netted the equaliser for Newport in the 34th minute.

Wynne’s goal sparked the visitors into life and Nat Jarvis completed the turnaround three minutes into the second half with his finish beyond Joe Baker.

Afan Lido’s teenage goalkeeper Ben Haines was on top form to earn his side a hard-fought point against Cambrian United in a goalless draw the M&P Group 3G.

Lido’s Travis James received a red card for a rash challenge on Jacob Jones just after the hour mark, but the hosts could not make their man advantage count as Haines made numerous saves to keep the game level.
