Penybont were held to a 0-0 draw by Cardiff Met on Friday night, a result that meant The New Saints secured the JD Cymru Premier title.
Bont started brightly as Owen Pritchard played through James Crole who forced a good save from Kelland Absalom, but six minutes before half-time they found themselves down to 10 man as Billy Borge was sent off.
The defender, who had earlier been booked after hacking down Lewis Rees, was shown a second yellow card for hauling down Sam Jones as he was through on goal.
Despite having a man less, Bont continued to create chances in the second half. Clayton Green met Mael Davies’ cross but headed straight at Absalom, before Ben Morgan somehow failed to turn the ball home from a yard out after Keyon Reffell had flicked on Kane Owen’s corner. Gabe Kircough did put the ball in the back of the net from close range, but the goal was ruled out for as Green was offside in the build-up.
Rhys Griffiths’ side remain six points ahead of third-place Haverfordwest County – who they travel to next weekend – after the Bluebirds also drew 0-0 away at Bala Town on Saturday.
Lakesiders goalkeeper Joel Torrance was on top form at Maes Tegid as he made important saves to deny Ben Ahmun in the first half and Greg Walters after the break.
Bala almost broke the deadlock on 77 minutes through Joe Malkin, who saw his powerful strike at the near post remarkably tipped over the bar by Zac Jones.
It was a 15th clean sheet of the season for Haverfordwest – the most in the JD Cymru Premier – while Bala earned their first point in six games in Phase Two.
JD Cymru Leagues North round-up
Caersws climbed back out of the JD Cymru North relegation zone with a stoppage time equaliser in a 1-1 draw at home against Denbigh Town on Saturday.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the 70th minute as Owen Davies was in the right place at the right time to nod the ball home from Ben Lockley’s header back across goal.
Caersws may have thought their chance to earn a point had gone when they were awarded a penalty in the 90th minute but Sam Phillips was denied by Beattie – the Denbigh goalkeeper’s second penalty save in the space of two games.
However, there was more drama to come in the 93rd minute when Caersws substitute Max McLaughlin popped up to poke the ball home in the midst of a goalmouth scramble.
The Bluebirds are now above the drop zone on goal difference after ending their five-match losing streak, with a game in hand over 14th-place Ruthin Town.
