JD Cymru Leagues Games to Watch: 3-4 October

October begins with some eye-catching encounters across the JD Cymru Leagues. Here are the key fixtures to watch.

JD Cymru Premier – Colwyn Bay v Caernarfon Town (Saturday, 5:15pm)

The Blue Turtle Arena is preparing to host another bumper crowd as Colwyn Bay host second-place Caernarfon Town on Saturday evening.

Bay began September with back-to-back wins over Cardiff Met and Haverfordwest County, but have failed to even score in their last three outings – a goalless draw away at Llanelli Town before a pair of 1-0 losses against Bala Town and Penybont. The Seagulls are seventh in the table, a point off the top half.

Colwyn Bay v Caernarfon Town

Caernarfon are unbeaten in their five away matches so far this season, but suffered a shock 3-0 defeat to Cardiff Met at the Go Goodwins Stadium last Sunday to slip to third in the table – three points behind leaders The New Saints.

The two teams have already met this season as the Cofis triumphed 3-0 in the Nathaniel MG Cup second round at the start of August, while Richard Davies’ side were also victorious in both JD Cymru Premier clashes between the sides in 2023/24.

JD Cymru North – Airbus UK Broughton v Holywell Town (Friday, 8pm)

Two of the JD Cymru North’s title contenders meet on Friday night, as league leaders Airbus UK Broughton host third-place Holywell Town – with both sides level on points ahead of the game.

The Wellmen had won all of their first seven league games of the season before a 1-1 draw at home against Rhyl 1879 last Friday, with Jamie Breese grabbing a second half equaliser for his ninth goal in his last six games.

Dropped points for Johnny Haseldin’s side allowed Airbus to move top of the table on goal difference following their 5-2 win against Gresford Athletic on the same night. The Wingmakers have not lost a league match on home turf since May 2023.

George Peers’ four-goal haul inspired Airbus to a thrilling 8-3 victory over Holywell in the first league meeting between the sides last season, before Holywell earned revenge with a 2-1 triumph in January’s reverse fixture.

JD Cymru South – Caerau Ely v Newport City (Friday, 7:30pm)

A pair of promotion hopefuls almost meet in the JD Cymru South on Friday night as Caerau Ely host Newport City.

Caerau Ely, who have lost just once in the league so far this season, climbed up to third in the table last weekend with an emphatic 5-0 away win over Treowen Stars. The Young Guns are two points ahead of Newport City, who they leapfrogged last weekend.

The Steelmen suffered their first league defeat of the campaign as they were beaten 1-0 away at Carmarthen Town last Saturday, slipping to fourth in the standings in the process.

Newport City won both league meetings between the two sides last season, triumphing 2-1 at Cwrt yr Ala Road before a 3-1 victory on home turf.

JD Cymru South – Trefelin v Afan Lido (Saturday, 5pm)

Trefelin will aim to continue their bright form when they host local rivals Afan Lido at Ynys Park on Saturday evening.

Andy Hill’s side have lost just one league game so far this season, with back-to-back wins over Ammanford (2-0) and Ynyshir Albions (5-0) seeing them climb up to second in the table. Striker Luke Bowen has seven goals in his last five games, including a hat-trick against Ynyshir last weekend.

Lido currently sit in 13th place after winning just twice from their opening eight league matches. Garry Taylor’s side were narrowly beaten 1-0 at home by Aberystwyth Town last weekend which was their third straight loss, but they have won four of their seven away matches in all competitions this season.

Nothing could separate the sides in both meetings last season, as they played out a goalless draw in October before a 1-1 draw in December which saw Jon Hood’s opener for Lido cancelled out by a late Chris Jones own goal.
