JD Cymru North round-up: Title rivals Airbus and Holywell play out goalless draw

Nothing could separate JD Cymru North title rivals Airbus UK Broughton and Holywell Town in a goalless stalemate at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium on Friday night.

Craig Lindfield came agonisingly close to putting the Wellmen ahead as his effort flew inches wide of the post, but the best chance fell to Airbus forward Danny Warren who fired over the bar when one-on-one with John Danby.

Both sides keep their unbeaten records intact, with Holywell becoming the first team to record a clean sheet against Airbus in the league since December 2023. The pair sit level on 23 points, with Airbus top on goal difference, one point ahead of third-place Llandudno whose fixture against Mold Alexandra was postponed.

Nathan Brown scored a quickfire double as Denbigh Town returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over local rivals Rhyl 1879 at Central Park on Friday.

Rhyl struck the woodwork three times in the opening hour before finally finding an opener on 67 minutes when Archie Jones’ effort struck the bar and bounced off Denbigh goalkeeper Elijah Beattie.

The visitors had the chance to double that lead five minutes later when they were awarded a penalty for Ben Lockley’s challenge on Jones in the box, but captain Reece Fairhurst blazed over the bar from 12 yards.

That proved to be costly for the Lilywhites as Denbigh levelled a minute later when Brown produced a stunning strike distance which flew over Alex Swindell, before the forward completed the turnaround nine minutes later with a swerving volley into the bottom corner after a solo run down the left from Nathan Doforo.

Buckley Town extended their unbeaten run to five matches with an impressive 3-0 win over promotion hopefuls Newtown at The Globe on Friday night.

Brad Knight opened the scoring after just 13 minutes with his sixth league goal of the season, before Luke Mariette’s sublime finish from the edge of the area doubled the lead on the hour mark.

Max Moore netted for the third consecutive game to seal victory late on, as the Bucks moved up to sixth in the table.

Flint Mountain secured their first away point of the season as Owen Cassidy bagged a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Caersws on Saturday.

Harry Cottam found the breakthrough for Caersws inside just four minutes as he headed home from Sam Phillips’ corner, while the Bluebirds were unlucky not to have a two-goal advantage at the break as Callum Francis-Jones’ strike hit the woodwork.

Mountain skipper Kieran Owens scored his first goal for the club to level the contest in the 63rd minute, but Caersws were ahead again just six minutes later as Dillon Browne tucked away the rebound from Max McLaughlin’s saved effort.

A straight red card for Bluebirds defender Tom Edwards with five minutes remaining gave Flint Mountain hope of a late equaliser, which Cassidy found in the 89th minute. Both sides still have just one league win to their name this season.

There was also late drama at Memorial Playing Fields as Dan Cox scored a late equaliser to salvage a point for Ruthin Town in a 1-1 draw with Guilsfield.

Sam Flory put the Guils ahead 10 minutes into the second half as he met Sean Griffiths’ cross and finished past Dan Goldston from close range. However, Ruthin found their leveller with four minutes of normal time remaining as Cox headed home from Josh Evans’ delivery.
