JD Cymru South round-up: Pontypridd United defeat Treowen Stars in seven-goal thriller

Pontypridd United's Jamie Veale celebrates scoring his sides third goal during the JD Cymru South 25/match between Pontypridd United and Treowen Stars AFC at USW Sports Park in Pontypridd on the 3rd October 2025

Pontypridd United delivered their best performance of the season in a 5-2 home win over Treowen Stars in the JD Cymru South on Friday night.

It was the visitors who took the lead after just eight minutes at USW Sport Park as captain Christian Davies, but Ponty scored twice late in the first half through Harvey Selway and Tom Hillman to turn the game around.

The Dragons carried that momentum into the second half as skipper Jamie Veale made it 3-1 just two minutes after the break, before Ethan Edwards netted his side’s fourth goal on the hour mark.

Lewis Green scored his first goal for Treowen soon after, but any hopes that the visitors had of a comeback were swiftly quashed as Sam Johnson bagged his third goal in four games to restore Ponty’s three-goal advantage in the 70th minute. It was only a second league win of the season for Mark Dunford’s side, who leapfrog Treowen in the table up to 11th place.

Cardiff Draconians continued their impressive recent form with a 2-1 comeback win over Cwmbran Celtic at Lydstep Park on Saturday.

Bottom-of-the table Celtic led 1-0 at the break thanks to Josh Gibson’s 14th-minute goal, but it was the half-time introduction of Sam Roberts from the bench that turned the game around in the Dracs’ favour.

The substitute levelled the contest just before the hour mark, before scoring what proved to be the winning goal in the 78th minute. A red card for Celtic captain Andrew Larcombe five minutes later increased the visitors’ woes.

Baglan Dragons scored deep into stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw at home against Llantwit Major on Saturday.

Llantwit took the lead five minutes before half-time when Jack Bevan headed home Kofi Rowe’s cross, which looked to have earned the visitors only their second league win of the season. That was until Baglan’s Nathan Logan popped up in the 95th minute to meet Jack Fleming’s corner with a header past Ryley Allen.

Ammanford also scored a late equaliser in their 1-1 draw away at Trethomas Bluebirds on Friday night.

Jon Hood gave Trethomas the lead after 23 minutes when he tapped in Jay Thomas’ cross from close range, while the contest turned into a scrappy affair with six yellow cards handed out before Bluebirds defender Alex Newman-Jones was sent off for a second booking midway through the second half.

Despite being a man down, the hosts held on to their advantage until the third minute of stoppage time when substitute Alex Giardelli emerged as the hero for Ammanford by poking home Owain Davies’ cross from a tight angle for his first goal for the club.

League leaders Cambrian United dropped points for only the second time this season as they were held to a 0-0 draw away at Carmarthen Town on Saturday.

It was an entertaining, end-to-end affair at the LHP Stadium but neither side could find the breakthrough and had to settle for a point each.

Second-place Trefelin missed the chance to close the gap on Cambrian as they also drew 0-0 at home against Afan Lido on Saturday evening.

It was a fiery local derby at Ynys Park, with six yellow cards handed out in the first half before Trefelin defender Jacob Jones was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 71st minute. Lido could not make their man advantage count late on, but they did keep their first league clean sheet of the season to halt a run of three straight defeats.
