JD Cymru North round-up: Buckley Town off the mark after stunning comeback

Buckley Town earned their first points of the JD Cymru North season with stunning a 3-2 comeback victory over Ruthin Town at The Globe on Friday night. 

Ruthin led 2-0 at half-time as Izaack Lambert headed home from Dan Holland’s corner before Harry Martin calmly converted from the penalty spot following a foul by Dan Burgess on Ethan Davies inside the box. 

Bucks assistant boss Mike Thompson admitted that things were ‘thrown’ in the home dressing room at half-time, but it clearly worked as they were level inside the opening nine minutes of the restart. Brad Knight produced a clinical volley from Max Moore’s flick-on, before Moore equalised with a powerful strike past Dan Goldston at the near post. 

Buckley manager Asa Hamilton was sent off after receiving two quick yellow cards while celebrating the equaliser, but his side went on to earn victory in dramatic style as summer arrival Luke Mariette headed home from Oli Blayney’s corner to complete a stunning turnaround in the 89th minute. 

Ruthin remain without a point from their opening three games and their woes increased as defender Tom Dougherty was shown a straight red card for a foul on Connor Littler deep into stoppage time.

JD Cymru North leaders Airbus UK Broughton made it three consecutive wins and clean sheets by defeating Penrhyncoch 1-0 at Cae Baker on Saturday. 

The decisive moment arrived in the 38th minute when George Peers did well to hold the ball up for Jordan Evans, who received a pass from his strike partner and confidently found the bottom corner for his second goal of the season. 

Penrhyncoch almost found a late equaliser but a crucial goal-line clearance from Kieran Evans ensured the Wingmakers took home all three points. 

Newtown also made it three wins from three matches with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Flint Mountain at Latham Park on Saturday. 

The Robins took the lead through a piece of good fortune on 20 minutes as Tom Jones’ lobbed effort was denied by the crossbar, only for the rebound to ricochet off Joe Ly and into the net.

Jamie Hyne doubled the advantage just two minutes later as he controlled Fin Starkey-Jones’ low ball and fired past Stephen Bullen from close range, before Louis Jacobs made it 3-0 by tapping home Jones’ low cross just before the hour mark. 

Some neat play from Flint Mountain saw substitute Rian O’Riordan pull a goal back in the final 10 minutes, but it was too little too late as Newtown saw out the win.  

Holywell Town complete the trio of clubs with a perfect record still intact following their 4-1 win at home against Guilsfield on Saturday.  

After Craig Lindfield saw his penalty hit the post in the 16th minute, Ilan Ap Gareth put the Wellmen ahead with a superb free-kick into the top corner seven minutes before half-time. 

Guilsfield were back on level terms inside the first minute of the second half thanks to James Smallwood’s low drive, but Fabrizio Murtas restored Holywell’s lead on the hour mark by rounding Guils goalkeeper Luke Evans and tapping home.

Ap Gareth completed his brace by heading home at the back post in the 88th minute, before Murtas grabbed a second goal of the afternoon for himself to wrap up victory two minutes later. 

Rhyl 1879 made it back-to-back victories with an impressive 3-0 home win over Caersws on Saturday afternoon. 

Reece Fairhurst opened the scoring from the penalty spot four minutes before half-time after Caersws goalkeeper Max Williams brought down Archie Jones inside the area. 

Jones rose highest to head home from Morgan Murray’s cross and double the advantage just before the hour mark, while Ben Lightfoot wrapped up the three points late on with a composed finish after some neat play by Lewis Hodson. 

Nathan Brown and Aidan Higgins both scored twice in a comfortable 5-0 away win for Denbigh Town against Gresford Athletic.

Transfer tracker – 2025/26

Brown netted his brace in the opening 27 minutes, as his corner remarkably looped straight over Gresford goalkeeper Lewis Dutton before he tapped into an empty net following a square ball from Higgins. 

Higgins got his first of the evening from the penalty spot on 55 minutes after Dutton fouled Matthew Worrall in the box, before netting again two minutes with a stunning solo effort that saw him dribble through the entire Gresford team and slot home. Alfie Vaughan added his name to the scoresheet late on with a close-range header from Sam Duffy’s cross. 

Owen Cordiner’s late goal salvaged a point for Mold Alexandra in a 1-1 draw with Holyhead Hotspur at the MKH Stadium on Saturday. 

Holyhead opened the scoring midway through the second half as Connor Owen fired into the roof of the net after Mold failed to deal with a delivery into the box. 

However, Cordiner rescued the hosts in the 83rd minute as he raced onto Dave Forbes’ flick-on and slotted past Guto Hughes for his first goal of the season.  

Llandudno dropped points for the first time this season after being held to a 0-0 stalemate at Brickfield Rangers on Saturday. 

Rangers defender Jack Edwards was sent off for a second bookable offence with seven minutes remaining, but Llandudno could not take advantage late on.
