JD Cymru North round-up | Colwyn Bay kick off the year with five-star performance

Colwyn Bay closed the gap on JD Cymru North leaders Airbus UK Broughton to just four points as they earned an emphatic 5-0 home win over Mold Alexandra on New Year’s Day.

Gwion Dafydd turned home Lloyd Marsh-Hughes’ cross in the 25th minute for his fifth goal in four matches to give Bay a narrow lead at half-time, before the floodgates opened after the break.

Dan Atkins tapped in Ethan Roberts’ cross just before the hour mark, while Dafydd Griffith headed into his own net 10 minutes later from another Marsh-Hughes delivery.

Atkins grabbed his second of the afternoon on 71 minutes after latching onto Josh Carey’s through ball and clinically finishing beyond Joe Smith, before defender Sol Forde wrapped things up late on as he powered home a header from Sam Hart’s corner.

Gresford Athletic continued their strong recent form and moved four points clear of the relegation zone with a crucial 1-0 home win against Ruthin Town.

The decisive moment arrived with 26 minutes on the clock as veteran striker Dave Forbes bagged his first goal since October. It was enough to earn the Colliers a third successive league win for the first time since February 2020, while defeat for Ruthin leaves them in the bottom three and winless in their last seven league games.

Holywell Town also claimed their third consecutive victory as late goals from Jake Cooke and Jamie Breese secured a 2-0 win away to Llandudno.

The Seasiders’ defence held firm for much of the contest, but the Wellmen eventually found the breakthrough with 70 minutes on the clock when Cooke received Brady McGilloway’s through ball and raced through on goal to slot past Cameron Darling for his sixth goal of the season.

Cooke then turned provider in the 84th minute as he played in Breese, who cut inside and fired home to seal the three points for the reigning champions.
