JD Cymru North & South round-up | Nothing to separate Llanelli Town and Trethomas Bluebirds

There was nothing to separate JD Cymru South title rivals Llanelli Town and Trethomas Bluebirds on Friday night as they played out a 1-1 draw at Stebonheath.

League leaders Llanelli were only ahead of the Bluebirds on goal difference at kick-off and that remains the case with eight matches remaining of the campaign.

The Reds took the lead in the 33rd minute when Sean Cronin got away from his marker and met Taylor Jones’ corner with a header into the corner.

However, the veteran defender was then involved in the Bluebirds’ equaliser with 16 minutes remaining when he fouled Ethan Edwards inside the box and Gareth Tedstone stepped up to convert the resulting penalty.

At the other end of the JD Cymru South table, Cwmbran Celtic moved out of the relegation zone on Saturday as Brandon Virgo’s dramatic stoppage-time winner secured a 3-2 victory away at fellow strugglers Goytre United.

It was level at the break at Glenhafod Park Stadium after Goytre’s January signing Ollie Bradley opened his account for the club to cancel out Gabe Howell’s opener for Celtic.

Captain Andy Larcombe restored the visitors’ lead in the 66th minute, but Goyt quickly equalised again, this time through Luke Birnage – who like Bradley joined from Ely Rangers last month.

A straight red card for Goytre defender Harry Bailey in the 89th minute handed Celtic the impetus heading into stoppage time and it was debutant Virgo who netted it the 94th minute to earn his side only a third away win of the campaign.

In the JD Cymru North, Owen Cordiner scored a hat-trick as Mold Alexandra triumphed 3-1 over Prestatyn Town at Bastion Gardens on Friday.

Cordiner found the breakthrough in the 12th minute as he tapped home from close range, before doubling the advantage from the penalty spot on the half hour mark after he had been fouled in the box.

Prestatyn’s January signing Rob Parry got his team back in the game midway through the second half as he found the net with a clever backheel, but Cordiner completed his treble in the fifth minute of stoppage time by heading home from Henry Nash’s corner to make sure of Mold’s first away win since October.

Guilsfield and Flint Mountain took home a point each in a 1-1 draw at Clos Mytton on Saturday afternoon.

Luke Johnston gave Mountain the lead in style in the 27th minute when he sent a sublime half-volley off the post beyond Reece Thompson from the edge of the area. However, Guilsfield levelled the contest in first half stoppage time courtesy of captain Jamie Hyne, who found the net for the third consecutive game.

The two sides remain separated by just one point in the league table, with Mountain in seventh and Guilsfield in eighth.
