Welsh Blood Service League Cup | Round Two recap

Penrhyncoch caused the biggest upset in the Welsh Blood Service League Cup second round as they triumphed 5-1 over Holywell Town at Cae Baker on Saturday.

The Roosters sit nine places below the Wellmen in the JD Cymru North table, but two goals late in the first from Kieran Booker and Dan Owen put them in control at the break before Ifan Burrell made it 3-0 in the 49thminute after coming on as a half-time substitute.

Jamie Breese’s penalty three minutes later gave Holywell a lifeline, but Harri Horwood restored the hosts’ three-goal cushion in the 67th minute before Burrell grabbed his second of the afternoon in stoppage time to send Gari Lewis’ side into the Northern section semi-finals in style.

Current JD Cymru North leaders Airbus UK Broughton also hit five in a 5-1 victory away to Llay Miners Welfare on Saturday.

The Wingmakers made a fast start at The Ring as Oli Lanceley fired home the rebound from Danny Warren’s blocked shot inside just five minutes, but the contest was level at the break after Jonathan Collo equalised for Welfare nine minutes before half-time with a close range finish.

But there was to be no cup shock as Airbus found three goals in the space of 14 minutes in the second half to take firm control of the tie. Nathan Williams headed his side back in front, before Lanceley scored his second of the afternoon and Danny Warren found the net in the midst of a goalmouth scramble.

The win was wrapped up in the 89th minute by substitute James Davies, who had only been on the pitch for seven minutes, with a sweet strike from the edge of the area.

Airbus’ JD Cymru North title rivals Colwyn Bay also reached the regional semi-finals with a 3-0 away win over Gresford Athletic on Saturday.

The deadlock was broken in the 26th minute by Craig Lindfield, who netted his 20th goal of the season in all competitions, before Josh Carey doubled the lead with a sweetly struck free-kick six minutes into the second half.

Bay’s new signing George Nugent came off the bench for his debut just after the hour mark and grabbed an assist in the closing stages, setting up fellow substitute Gwion Dafydd to seal victory.

Bangor 1876 complete the Northern section semi-final line-up following their 2-0 home win over Ruthin Town on Saturday afternoon.

After a goalless first half, Tom Mahoney found the breakthrough on 53 minutes after he received a throw-in from Cai Powell-Roberts and superbly picked out the far corner with a curling effort from distance.

Liam Morris gave his side a cushion in the 77th minute as he latched onto Mason Blackwell-Jones’ through ball and applied a clinical finish into the bottom corner, ensuring that Bangor’s seven-match winless run came to an end.

In the Southern section, Luke Cummings scored a stoppage-time winner to earn Pontypridd United a 2-1 win away at Caerau Ely on Friday night.

Liam Bishop gave the hosts an early lead in the seventh minute and the tie seemed to be firmly in their favour when Ponty defender Jordan Knott was sent off for a second yellow card offence seven minutes before half-time.

However, Dragons substitute Keston Davies found an equaliser in the 69th minute to set up a tense end to the game. Caerau Ely were awarded a penalty six minutes later but Tom McLean missed from the spot, which proved costly as Cummings popped up in the third minute of stoppage time to earn Ponty a place in the regional semi-finals.

There was also late drama at Glasbrook Field where Penrhiwceiber Rangers scored in stoppage time to seal a 2-1 win over Carmarthen Town on Saturday.

It took 83 minutes for the opening goal to arrive as Harvey Hughes put Rangers ahead, only Carmarthen defender Trystan Jones to equalise four minutes later as he tapped home from Liam Reed’s header back across goal.

With a penalty shootout on the horizon, Rangers substitute Jack Thomas netted in the sixth minute of stoppage time – with what proved to be the last kick of the game – to send his side through.

Like Penrhiwceiber Rangers, Newport City are also in the Southern semi-finals in their debut season in the competition after a 1-0 home win over Ammanford on Saturday.

The decisive moment arrived just before the hour mark as Owen Bancroft sent a powerful effort into the top corner, with the Steelmen holding out for a first clean sheet on home turf since September.

Trefelin needed to come from behind to win 2-1 against Taffs Well at Ynys Park on Friday night.

Abdul Ibrahim netted his first goal for the Wellmen to open the scoring two minutes into the second half, but an own goal from Jak Carson levelled the contest with just 17 minutes remaining.

Roan Piper, brought on as a half-time substitute, completed the comeback for Tref as he fired past Iwan Hooper in the 80th minute.
