JD Cymru Premier round-up: Flint Town United earn crucial away win to boost survival hopes

Flint Town United moved seven points clear of the JD Cymru Premier relegation zone with a 3-1 win over Haverfordwest County at Ogi Bridge Meadow on Sunday.

Flint opened the scoring in the 18th minute as Ben Hughes’ header in the midst of a scramble inside the area deflected off Ifan Knott and looped into the net, giving the midfielder his first league goal of the season.

Haverfordwest were awarded a penalty just one minute into the second half when Harry Owen handled Rhys Abbruzzese’s cross. Ben Ahmun stepped up from the spot and found the net via the underside of the crossbar, notching in his 11th league goal of the campaign.

Darren Stephenson restored Flint’s lead on 80 minutes by controlling Mikey Burke’s cross and firing into the bottom corner, before quickly doubling his tally two minutes later to give the Silkmen comfort as he smartly flicked the ball home from Osebi Abadaki’s initial strike.

Flint captain Owen was shown a straight red card in the 86th minute for denying Corey Shephard a goalscoring opportunity, but the visitors held on to claim a vital three points.

Victory for Flint leaves Bala’s top-flight status in serious jeopardy, as the Silkmen were held to a goalless draw by already-relegated Llanelli Town at Maes Tegid on Friday night.

Bala had glorious chances to find the breakthrough, but Llanelli goalkeeper Alex Pennock was on top form to deny Jacob Tarasenko’s low effort from close range and Connor Evans’ header from just two yards out.

Despite a host of chances, the Lakesiders nearly went away empty handed in the closing stages as Llanelli duo Morgan Evans and Tristan Jenkins both saw strikes from the edge of the area denied by the post. Bala are now six points adrift of safety with five games left to play.

Bala Town need a drastic turnaround in form to avoid relegation

Caernarfon Town earned their first victory in Phase Two as Brad Young’s brace inspired a 3-0 win over Colwyn Bay at the Go Goodwins Stadium on Friday.

The Cofis took the lead with 23 minutes on the clock as Rio Owen smartly flicked the ball over Ryan Astles and delivered a low cross into Young, who made no mistake tapping past Alex Brown from close range.

Louis Robles thought he had equalised for Bay when he headed in the rebound from Jordan Davies’ saved effort, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Young doubled his and Caernarfon’s tally 10 minutes later by receiving Danny Gosset’s short pass and firing into the top corner.

Gosset added his name to the scoresheet late on to seal all three points for the hosts as he placed a loose ball into the roof of the net after Paulo Mendes’ initial effort was blocked. Richard Davies’ side are now back up to fourth in the table, leapfrogging Bay in the process.
