JD Cymru South round-up: Caerau Ely stun promotion rivals Aberystwyth Town

Caerau Ely reignited their JD Cymru South promotion bid with a stunning 4-0 victory over Aberystwyth Town at Park Avenue on Sunday.

The Young Guns took the lead inside just eight minutes as Hywel Davies’ low cross found Ollie Redhead, who tapped home for his sixth league goal of the season.

Dean Wheeler’s side struck the crossbar, missed a one-on-one and had an effort cleared off the line later in the first half, but the eventually found their second goal thanks to Liam Bishop’s strike just before the hour mark.

Bishop grabbed his second, and Caerau’s third, seven minutes later with a curling shot into the top corner from outside the area. Tim Parker headed home from Tom McClean’s cross soon after, his fifth goal in his last four games, to seal an impressive result.

Caerau leapfrog Aberystwyth into fourth place and now sit just one point behind the promotion spots after third-place Ammanford suffered a shock 3-1 loss away at Afan Lido on Sunday.

Lido took the lead after just six minutes as Brandon Roberts’ cross deflected into the path of Cameron Keetch, who unleashed a clinical volley from distance.

Ammanford equalised in the 29th minute as Adam John tucked away the rebound from Dan John’s saved effort, but the visitors were reduced to 10 men on the stroke of half-time as Matt Delaney was shown a straight red card following an altercation.

Lido eventually made the most of the numerical advantage as captain Liam Griffiths restored the lead on 69 minutes with a powerful half-volley from John Hall’s cross.

Liam McCreesh put the game to bed nine minutes later as he calmly converted from the penalty spot after Jak Carson was fouled inside the area. Lido have now won back-to-back games for the first time this season and are a healthy 13 points clear of the relegation zone.

Nothing could separate Newport City and Carmarthen Town in a spectacular 4-4 draw at the Newport Stadium on Sunday.

Lewis Reed opened his account for Carmarthen after joining the club from Afan Lido last month with the opening goal in the 21st minute, before Newport levelled the scoreline thanks to Ellis Sage’s low driven finish. However, Reed and strike partner Liam Thomas both scored just before half-time to put Carmarthen 3-1 up at the interval.

Those late first half goals seemed to have put the Old Gold in control, but Sam Johnson halved the deficit and then set up Ollie Burton within the space of five minutes to remarkably make it three apiece.

Thomas put Carmarthen back in front with his second goal of the afternoon on 82 minutes, but the Steelmen quickly equalised once more as Ryan Kavanagh converted from the penalty spot. Carmarthen remain fifth in the table, one point and one place above Newport, who have played a game fewer.

League leaders Trefelin maintained their narrow advantage at the top of the table as Luke Bowen’s late penalty secured a 1-0 win over Llantwit Major at the UWL Stadium on Saturday.

Major kept Trefelin at bay for 83 minutes of the contest, but Tom Walbeoff’s foul inside the area resulted in a spot-kick which Bowen calmly converted to score for the fifth consecutive game.

Trefelin remain just one point clear of second-place Cambrian United, who secured a 4-2 victory over Trethomas Bluebirds at the M&P Group 3G on Sunday.

The Bluebirds made a stunning start to the contest as Norton Ferreira created space and fired home to give the visitors a sixth-minute lead. However, Cambrian were level just 11 minutes later as Alex Bonthron scored for the third game in a row.

Dylan Edwards bagged a brace in the second half to complete the turnaround and give the Rhondda side a two-goal cushion before substitute Jack Fox got in on the act. Ferreira set up Osian Rees as the Bluebirds pulled a goal back in stoppage time, but that only proved to be a consolation as Cambrian picked up their eighth consecutive league win.

Ynyshir Albions moved nine points clear of the relegation zone with a 1-1 draw against in-form Treowen Stars at the Ynyshir Oval on Saturday.

Stars forward Harvey Selway, whose last goal in fact came against his current club for Pontypridd United in October, put the visitors ahead in the 64th minute. However, Dion Facey brought the Buns level late in the day to salvage a crucial point in their fight for survival.
