JD Cymru Premier round-up: Haverfordwest County out of the relegation zone with narrow win

Haverfordwest County climbed out of the JD Cymru Premier relegation zone with a 1-0 victory over Colwyn Bay at Ogi Bridge Meadow on Saturday afternoon.

Bay goalkeeper Alex Brown made diving saves to deny Dylan Rees, Corey Shephard and Ben Fawcett, but the Bluebirds eventually found the breakthrough in the 63rd minute when Rhys Abbruzzese’s low effort from the edge of the area trickled into the bottom corner.

Fawcett missed a glorious chance to double the lead from close range and also hit the crossbar in stoppage time, but it mattered not as Haverfordwest held on to their first win in four games.

Flint Town United have now dropped into the bottom two, with the Silkmen losing 3-0 at home against league leaders The New Saints on Friday.

Flint came agonisingly close to taking an early lead as Sidi Fofana saw his header cleared off the line, before TNS found the opener in the 19th minute when Danny Redmond’s clever flick-on played through Ben Clark to slot home his second goal in as many games.

Jordan Williams doubled the advantage on 33 minutes as he received Dominic Corness’ pass and curled beautifully into the bottom corner. The division’s top scorer sealed victory with his second goal of the night early in the second half, pouncing on Isaac Lee’s wayward header and steering the ball beyond Jack Flint.

Jordan Williams’ two goals for TNS against Flint took his tally to 16 in the JD Cymru Premier this season

TNS remain nine points clear at the top of the table, after second-place Penybont claimed a 2-1 victory over Bala Town at the DragonBet Stadium on Saturday.

Noah Daley fired Bont ahead just two minutes into the second half with a neat low finish beyond Joel Torrance, a goal which saw the forward reach double figures in the league this season.

James Crole then doubled the advantage on 67 minutes by meeting Owen Pritchard’s pinpoint cross and sending a bullet header into the bottom corner. Mael Davies thought he had added a third goal for Bont when he tapped home at the back post from Nathan Wood’s corner, but the goal was ruled out for a foul on Torrance.

Olamide Ibrahim played a neat one-two with Jacob Tarasenko before firing home to half the deficit for Bala in stoppage time, but it proved only to be a consolation as Penybont held on to claim all three points.

Josh Lock scored a stoppage time equaliser to salvage a point for Caernarfon Town in a 1-1 draw away at Llanelli Town on Saturday.

Newport County loanee Jac Norris put Llanelli ahead inside just five minutes as the ball dropped for him just inside the box and he sent a clinical volley into the bottom corner for his first senior goal.

That almost earned the Reds their first win in seven league matches, but they suffered heartbreak in the 92ndminute when Cofis substitute Lock received Matty Jones’ pass, drove into the area and fired low beyond Alex Pennock.

Caernarfon remain third in the table, while Llanelli are rooted to the bottom and are now eight points adrift of safety.
